Hit Network

2DayFM have tried and failed personality-centric brekky shows, 2DayFM have tried and failed with music-centric brekky shows.

At this point, I honestly think it’s time for SCA to cut their losses and relay the Regional NSW Hit brekky show into Sydney for a while. To me, it’s pretty obvious that whatever 2DayFM do at breakfast isn’t going to be competitive for as long as their main competitors are still Kyle & Jackie O, Fitzy & Wippa plus to a lesser extent Jonesy & Amanda and Bogart & Glenn.

Yes, multiple times over.

As far as I can see, there are only a few options:

  • Poach an existing Sydney breakfast team. I’m not sure how long the contracts are on their competitor shows, but SCA would have to more than make it worth their while. Skyscrapers worth of money.
  • Give up on the personality driven shows, cut costs and go back to the music driven show, and accept the low ratings (hopefully the lower costs make up for the lower ratings)
  • SCA foolishly killed all their regional breakfast shows, so it’s going to be way harder to do this, but SCA would have to really try and build up what regional shows are left, throw resources at them and help them grow, then select the best prospects to promote to Sydney breakfast. This would potentially take years, and what do they do in the meantime? Switch to cheaper music breakfast?

Really hard to see any good path out of their current mess. Whoever let K&J go really ruined the joint.

They could do what Melbourne is doing and going to a key big talent and basing a show around them. But they need a personality and style to pull it off like O’Connell or Sheargold. Not sure if it’d work in Sydney where shock and tack seem to rate over comedy.

Danny Lakey would be a decent candidate for this.

Danny Lakey seems like the perfect competitor for Kyle Sandilands, especially after this!

Well he isn’t funny but tries to be shocking, so would probably work in Sydney.

Almost as if I suggested him for that precise reason.

In reality, I suspect that the Hit/2Day crew care about their image and brand somewhat more than Triple M’s senior management does.

The producers change more regular than the “talent”.
The only person who is consistent across most of the failed shows is a certain network head of content who has micromanaged 2Day far more than any of the other stations. I don’t know her personally, and people say good things about her, but the fact is that she’s been completely ineffective and changing what’s happening under her watch.

I actually think Lakey is a better fit for hit than Triple M. The show had an energy on hit with constant social media and the same freedom that made K&J so good on the Hot 30.
That is now gone with the show now coming from within the more serious Triple M Melbourne.

Danny on Hit was great but towards I think someone needed to say “tone it down a bit” as it was becoming rather smutty.

I’d have to 100% agree. Put Danny Lakey at 2DayFM Breakfast. Skew younger & edgier.

His humour is different to Kyle. And Danny could make KIIS/K&J sound like the oldies station.

… Essentially, be what Merrick & Rosso were to Wendy Harmor and the then 2DayFM Morning Crew.

Do we need to have another dickhead on radio at breakfast?

I hear Alan Jones is available :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That’s what Sydney likes. On AM or FM.

Is this TV commercial for 2DayFM’s Morning Crew a new one?

While it’s good that Sydney is getting a different ad to the stock standard network spot that other markets have been receiving, I personally don’t think the “highlight” of Hughesy eating an oyster at a Japanese restaurant despite being vegan is particularly funny or likely to attract many new listeners to the show.
