Personally I don’t think it’s iconic anywhere apart from Melbourne. I don’t think it would appeal in the other cities.
Agree, I think FOX generally has connotations with more elderly people eg. silver haired fox as used today in reference to the Victorian CHO Brett Sutton.
And may cause confusion with FOX Sports pay TV.
They should make it white like they did with hit92.9 in Perth, looks much better.
Wow this thread has descended into chaos.
Beat is a terrible name for a radio station. It implies an upbeat type of music so is more restrictive than hit which can be extended to anything that is or was a hit. Beat is also tricky to say - it’s easy to lose the “T” when said quickly. It offers nothing new from hit, which they’re getting rid of in select markets. The strategy for those markets is clearly focused on using the heritage brand.
RnB Fridays is still on brand - it plays perfectly into the targeting of females 30+. How different do you expect the “new” format to be to hits and oldskool? That’s essentially what it still it. Maybe tweaked slightly, but they’ll still play modern music (maybe a little less), and older music (but increased to go a bit further back).
WTF? How is that any different to Hit ending in a “T”? I think you’re really overthinking it.
Is it bad that I wish SCA would sell the majority of regionals off? If I was them, I would have two stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, then follow those up with Canberra, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Hobart. It’d be great if they had Darwin too, but I doubt Grant Broadcasting would sell.
To me, things started to go bad for them when they took on so many stations. Bringing back heritage brands is a start. But I still think they’re going to be spread too thinly and run the risk of not staying focused.
I think, whichever station they rebrand as Triple M in Perth, will possibly be the launch station for a new Triple M network logo, with the others to follow suit. Much like 5MMM - it was the first to get the current logo when they switched to the “Totally Different” format at the end of 2003.
I doubt the M’s will change logo given Dubbo and Gippsland have just relaunched as Triple M.
Agree the regionals have just created too much work for them. They’d be better off syndicating their programming than running regionals.
Not to mention, because they have only a minimum number of commercial media voices of 4 there at present (SCA, Nine, News, Grant), SCA wouldn’t be able to buy the Darwin radio stations without going below the minimum.
Try saying them both quickly. The e and the i sounds leave your mouth a shape and the e sound is longer than the i sound.
It’s more a comparison to demonstrate how bad Beat is rather than how Hit is the perfect name (which it isn’t, it’s just better).
Actually, I’ve just realised why 104.7 in Canberra hasn’t switched over yet. Mix 106.3’s positioner is “Music That Makes You Feel Good”, so if 104.7 changed the music and their positioner to “Get That Feeling”, with references to “feeling good/great” on air, it’s way to same/same. Still, what should they do…? Push 104.7 to Triple M and let Mix 106.3 stay KIIS branded (with that logo), but with the Hit network music and positioner? It’s almost the same issue they have in Perth, but with the added complication of a J/V with ARN.
You raise some good points there. I hope you’re right about a new Triple M logo.
I also agree they could trim a lot of the really small regional markets from the network too. I’d probably still keep the likes of Central Coast and the bigger Qld cities like Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Central Qld and Wide Bay. But any markets below 100 - 150K would be questionable. I agree that things started to go downhill when they expanded too widely and the roll-out of Triple M to smaller regional towns is an abomination of the brand.
The only simple option I can see is to move Mix 106.3 to pure Gold (WS / Gold fm) network and format, and Hit 104.7 can stay with the Hit network and adopt the Get the feeling positioner all with their own logs.
Mix 106.3 may actually rate better with this format. I don’t think it would be to close to 2CA.
Why spend the money rebranding and flipping the format of both stations in a market with little competition on the fm band.
More details about Little Fox have been revealed.
Herald Sun reports that regular Fox presenters like Brendan Fevola, Fifi Fox, Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little will also contribute to Little Fox.
I remember the outrage when Triple M relaunched in Adelaide in 2003 and swapped formats with SAFM. This was a few years before Facebook and people flooded the message board on the 5MMM website demanding to change the format back. SAFM went to AC format and sounded a bit like it does now
I was in Adelaide for a year in 2003-2004 when Triple M did totally different. After sampling Nova in other cities, I actually thought Triple M Adelaide did a better job.
It was an obvious blocker but was done without care, listening to people such as Chris Page, they really sounded like they were having fun.
The playlist was better than Nova’s too - it was the perfect CHR/EDM format at the time.
If anything, that kind of format needs to be brought back to counter the Rhythmic CHR’s nowadays
I remember that time, didn’t last long before they changed it back. All happened after Grant, Jars and Milly left 5MMM.
I’ve noticed that the Fox DAB stations are now branded as “Hit” on air (was previously still branded as Fox despite the new names).
Odd move given that they are going for such localisation…
