Hey Hey It's Saturday

In June 1991 Hey Hey It’s Saturday, an Australian TV institution with Daryl and Ossie at the time, came to New Zealand screens for the first time and screened on TVNZ’s Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2).

That’s interesting.

In Australia it was also 6.30pm Saturday so I’m wondering if it was Live into NZ (4.30pm Melbourne time) ? A special packaged edition just for NZ? A repeat of the previous weeks episode that aired in Australia or was Hey Hey all Pre-recorded in those days?

Promo seems to suggest it’s a repeat of the episode which went to air in Australia a week prior?

@rock12 On Australia’s east coast (i.e. Sydney and Melbourne), the show was televised live from the GTV9 studios in Melbourne. But in New Zealand, it was pre-recorded and produced as a specially packaged version for New Zealand audiences via TVNZ, i.e. just one week after its original Australian broadcast (as seen on Channel Nine) … I think.

Not always. Was often taped on Fridays.

Often I recall Daryl making references to the Geelong AFL team either winning or losing earlier that day so those episodes must have been live.

Sometimes Hey Hey would air on a Friday due to sport or news events.

And sometimes earlier than that, in the later years it was recorded ‘Live to Tape’ during the week with the actual day often shifted so they could get international stars on the show whenever they were available. I was in Melbourne on holidays back in the late 80’s and tried (unsuccessfully) to get into the audience. That particular week they recorded on a Wednesday, the people I was staying with were regulars in the audience and made a point of telling me the recording day & time varied.

This would occur whenever there was a federal election

It was. It was also for a while taped on Saturday afternoon. I was in the studio audience on what happened to be Grand Final Day and Daryl was performing at the pre-game entertainment. He then rushed to GTV9 for the taping and made references to the grand final in the show but at the time we didn’t know who won although the result would obviously be known by the time it aired

I was also in the studio audience on another Saturday, the day after he’d won the Gold Logie

I’ve always wondered how Ossie and Ernie Carroll would have looked live. Did it seem odd when you saw it?

I just fell down a Hey Hey hole on YouTube. In 1996 did Ossie not appear? Second episode back, Jo Beths second show… no Ossie?

I think Ernie Carroll had retired by then?

it was 30 years ago so i only recall was strange to realise that Ernie sat to the side of the desk. Naturally you would assume he would be sitting beneath the desk. It was at that point you realised too that the camera never panned right of the set… which now made sense

My memory of Ossie appearing on the Graham Kennedy show was that he appeared from beneath the desk, which was obviously different to Hey Hey.

Ernie Carroll retired in December 1994 if I’m not mistaken, so there would’ve been no Ossie during the 1995-99 seasons.

Some sites say he retired due to ill health.

Ossie did return for a few episodes in 2009 and 2010.

During the STW-9 Appealathon years (1987 to 1991) it would have been taped during the week so the cast could head to Perth.

STW-9 and GWN only started taking Hey Hey after Aussat launched in 1986.

Did they ever take Hey Hey to Perth? They often did shows out of Sydney and special shows from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide, but did they do any shows from WA?

They did a report from Perth when it was hosting Supanova 2010. Clip courtesy of cardstack.
