Great songs heard on radio

From tonight’s DX session

Eat It - “Weird Al” Yankovic
(on 88.1 2RDJ Burwood)

50 Years - Uncanny X-Men
(on 90.1 2NBC Narwee)
nb. we are now just 10 years away from that point in time referenced in the song, I expect it to be big in 2035!

Party - Christine Anu
Just A Little Bit - Gina G
Read My Lips - Melissa Tkautz
(all on 100.3 2MCR Campbelltown - sounds like they had a 90s girl thing going, as they also played Natalie Imbruglia and pre-announced Girlfriend).

If you want till later…

I was in Carls Jr today… seemed like ages I was waiting for my order. And at first I thought they may have had UK Pop on. I heard:

The Kiwi classic:

I gotta get through this - Daniel Bedingfield

and then a song I haven’t heard in 25 years:

Sex on the beach - T Spoon

Wow! So Wild FM! Brought back so many memories! Kurrawa Beach it was, or was it Coolum? And what was her name again? I’d completely forgotten until this song came on. Oh-eh-oh-eh-oh.

Got a run on GOLD 101.7 at 10:12pm last night.

Annoyingly, I had just switched to the station on the last second of the song.

You think you’re a man - Divine right now on Stereo 10.

Great track. I think I first heard it on the Survey with Shirl and Irvine on Hot Hit 3XY. So funny hearing the audio and then forming a picture of who I thought the singer was in my mind.

Same thing happened with me and Marilyn ‘Calling your name’. First time I heard that song on 3ZC I thought it was some ‘Kenny Loggins’ type character with a beard and a flannelette shirt.

Woolworths Radio continues to surprise, with two classic underplayed Aussie songs…

INXS - “Just Keep Walking”
Easybeats - “She’s So Fine”

Definitely my favourite of theirs.

Roxette have so many great hits that never get airplay anymore…

The Big L, Vulnerable, Sleeping In My Car, How Do You Do amongst them.

I still even like hearing Dressed For Success, Dangerous, Joyride and It Must Have Been Love even though radio plays them regularly.

Only ‘The Look’ makes me tune out.

Yes! Total banger. And for a change of tempo I quite like ‘Run to you’ (just a bit more depth and less poppy than their earlier stuff).

I’ve tended to find ‘The look’ a bit monotonous but am always up for some Dressed for success… especially if I’m listening to Oldskool 80s - I don’t mind if it gets thrashed - it’s a great song, it can handle it.

Oldskool 80s play it twice a day, everyday. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Some good ones on Gleeson’s show on Triple M tonight

Don’t Tear It Down – V Spy V Spy
One Headlight – The Wallflowers
White Noise – The Living End
1985 – Bowling For Soup
Buddy Holly – Weezer
American Pie – Don McLean

One from Dave Gleeson Tuesday night, via 3SR Shepparton:

Ozzy Osbourne- Crazy Train

I don’t think I’ve heard this on Australian commercial radio before, maybe only on Alice Cooper which doesn’t really count.

(I was listening to 3SR as I watched a ‘Slow TV’ train journey from Shepparton to Melbourne. Put on 3PBS last night for the Seymour-Melbourne leg which had an interesting post punk show on).

I listened on abc radio Perth and heard of a great song, The Lions Roar from First Aid Kit.

Milli Vanilli - Blame It on the Rain (European single version)

I thought this and “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” were lost-to-radio due to the performers getting “exposed” for not being the actual vocalists, but I was very surprised to hear “Blame It…” on Mix 106.3 eariler today.

At least we know who the actual vocalists are now, so it’s not so bad… they did have a few good songs… “Baby Don’t Forget My Number” is probably my favourite of theirs.

Their acoustic performance is so good.

I had a listen to the ARN regional Retro 20/20 Countdown a couple of times earlier this week and heard some good ones (which I’ve been meaning to post!).

Tues night (streamed via 2EC) - Theme was ‘Kids’
Real Gone Kid – Deacon Blue
Israel’s Son – Silverchair
Change In Mood – Kids In The Kitchen
Fortunate Son – Creedence Clearwater Revival
No Son Of Mine – Genesis
Son Of A Preacher Man – Dusty Springfield
Children Of The Revolution – T Rex
Teach Your Children – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Father And Son – Cat Stevens

And on Wednesday night (streamed via 2NM) - theme was ‘Top 20 from this week in 1986’
Digging Your Scene - The Blow Monkeys
Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
I Wanna Be A Cowboy - Boys Don’t Cry
What Have You Done For Me Lately (12 inch mix) - Janet Jackson
Stimulation - Wa Wa Nee
Do You Wanna Be - I’m Talking
Living Doll - Cliff Richard & The Young Ones
Touch Me - Samantha Fox (a guilty pleasure of mine - the song that is, not the ‘touching’ part )

It is one of better shows on commercial radio these days, some good tracks in that list. Wish
Wsfm took the show.

Rare to hear that on commercial radio these days, though it was semi regular in the 90s. I’m guessing that’s due to its length. Of course it gets a run on my show along with plenty of others from Genesis.

Though length has not stopped some stations (yes GOLD I’m looking at you) from butchering songs from say 9 minutes to down under 4 minutes on air (eg. Guns N Roses ‘November Rain’).

Yes I recall it getting a lot of airplay at the time.
