General TV History

That long? I swear Seven ditched the slant (at least on the PRG) by 2010.

It was noted back in 2009 how Nine kinda copied Seven’s slant with its big white bar in the original Welcome Home look. God that whole era was hideous and it still lasted four times as long as the superior Choose Nine package.

I absolutely adored that theme though. Miles better of what is now on air.

And Queensland’s opener from October 2008 look was fantastic. I really love how slick it felt with the shot of the presenters. That shot of the Gold Coast was also gorgeous.

The Welcome Home 1.0 was one of the worst on air looks ever

GWN News Hour from 1997, using a similar set to TVW back then.

Youtube: Jenmountford

GWN launched its satellite service 30 years ago today on the 18th of October 1986, covering one of the largest geographic television markets in the world. Shortly after opening, Telethon was broadcast on relay from TVW-7 Perth.

Prior to this, GWN had only existed in the Southwest, Great Southern and parts of the Wheatbelt, with Kalgoorlie and Esperance joining earlier in January 86 after GWN purchased VEW.

GTW-11 Geraldton would continue to operate independently until April 1987, when GWN acquired the midwest station and completed its suite of stations across Western Australia.

The PRGs were modified in Late 2009 (possibly around the time that 7TWO launched?), however the “slant look” continued to be used on most other elements until 2011 and for the Sponsor Billboards until the November 2012 relaunch.

I actually liked the 2009-12 1st generation “Welcome Home” On-Air Presentation package, but do agree that many of the original elements were rather tacky in hindsight.

The 2006-08 theme music certainly works better with Nine News Queensland than the current version (which probably explains why QTQ kept in until the 2012 relaunch), that’s for sure!

And even though the I was never particularly fond of Nine’s news graphics during the earlier part of 2008, the shortlived modified version of the graphics that Nine News Queensland used for maybe about six months or so (there was a glossy “sliding blue panels” graphic added to the titles and transitions, I’m not sure if anyone else remembers let alone has footage of this) was better than what Sydney used at the time IMO.

I remember watching GWN at Katherine, NT in 1987.

It was quite odd seeing ads for businesses in Bunbury and Kalgoorlie, and watching “National Nine News” Perth at 8pm local time with Tracey Preston and a male presenter (whom I can’t recall).

Reception still wasn’t great, but quite watchable.

Must have been weekend news. GWN had their own news on weeknights.

I think it was a Friday night.

As I also remember hearing “Take 40” on 8DN (via their 765am relay in Katherine) and thinking to myself that it was the first time I had heard Take 40 on a Friday night (as I was a big fan of the show back then).

And we were only in Katherine for 1 night I think.

It’s really strange to think that 765AM Translator is still On-Air in Katherine & is a relay for a CHR FM Station in Hot100. I’m betting it’s one of the ONLY FM Stations in the world that has an AM Translator

I guess I’m thinking even further back… back to the 70s. I think it was 1979 or thereabouts that Rob Gell was the first with the 4 day forecast.

This has been posted before but someone has recently uploaded a better quality version of this pretty decent NBN News promo

That blue and gold rectangle as a logo got a lot of use in Australia - between Ten News in the late 80s, to NBN and Seven Nightly News in the mid-late 90s.

Interesting Ten News Promo from the 80’s, for 2 reasons - it’s conversational and they are sending their lead newsreader on overseas assignments!

I don’t know why this user posted this in the Random Mocks thread, but definitely well worth a mention here I think:

Between this and the showreel clip from Velvet, it seems that there were a few elements of Nine’s 2001-02 On-Air Presentation package that never went to air. Certainly most of the music (yes, I know that the music used in these showreel/demo clips from designers isn’t always the music that’s intended to be used On-Air) was very different to what went to air anyway.

That “projector” Ident would’ve made for an absolutely fantastic Movie/Special Presentation Opener, even though the one Nine actually used back in 2001-02 was pretty good in it’s own right.

WIN apparently used them all.

Nine definitely used all of those in that WIN clip except possibly the 3rd one. (or possibly just didn’t play it a lot. It is one I don’t really recall seeing)

I think Nine aired all those IDs in the WIN clip (but obviously with a different logo at the end) but the main green one was probably played considerably more often than the others. I wonder if WIN picked up on all those floating Nine logos that can be briefly seen at the end of the “kaleidoscope” Ident?

As well as a music change I think the IDs may have been shortened to 10 Seconds by Nine before they were aired, since the Amazonas Studios site shows 20 Second Versions of (some of) the Idents.

The music in the second clip was used for signposts at the time.
