General TV History

This was TV Times’ preview of Seven’s coverage of the Bathurst 500 (as it was then pre-metric conversion) in 1969:

Also note GTW11 in Geraldton (before being taken over by GWN) not included in the list. Presumably, like NTD8, the station may not have had a direct link to be able to pick up the coverage.

Even a couple of years later, in 1983, GTW11 were still showing delayed telecasts of things like the Logie Awards. Must have had to rely on tapes being sent up from Perth.

Wow! Eight cameras! I wonder how miniature the hand-held camera was.

The first news from the new Expo studio in May 1988 featured Rebecca Wilson on sport (unfortunately I didn’t keep her report) as part of the 10.30 am Mid Morning News.

High Definition in 1956?

That’s a good find.

At least back then there was no confusion about whether “high definition” was 576p, 1080i or 1080p. It was what it was.

For the time, 625 lines was high definition. The US were stuck with 525 lines for the next 60 years and the UK 405 lines for another decade.

Off topic, but an interesting watch on the shutdown of 405 line transmitters in the UK - scheduled for January 1985

SMH report on 7 April 1949 about the first television demonstration in Australia, in Sydney on 6 April 1949.

A half page advertisement by Shell, who sponsored the demonstration, is at the bottom of this page in the SMH.

1980’s National Nine News Melbourne promo.

Very young Peter Mitchell in there.

Promo for Season 1 of Desperate Housewives, one of the shows that helped put Seven into the number one spot. Showing network presentation from that time - note 7HD logo. Also show watermark “7 Digital” in use at that time.

Research suggests promo is for episode 5.

I believe that promo is actually from 2008, since it uses the graphics presentation that Seven had in use from about January until October of that year when they switched to the “slant” look which lasted a couple of years. Also, the 7HD logo in that promo is from the 2007-10 era.

In 2005, Seven would’ve been using “black bar” graphics with an Impact-esque font in their promos which also made up the PRG of the time.

Not to mention the fact that Dirty Sexy Money didn’t even exist in 2005.

The “slant” look lasted after the Beijing 2008 Olympics until 2011. The first on air look was a modification of the 2007 on-air presentation which was short lived.

Ahh those flying billboards looked so bad!

I think it goes into the “Seemed like a good idea at the time.” category.
