General TV History

I don’t know why but those Nine idents from 2001-2002 always remind me of these idents Ten made in 1997.

Sorry, missed that.

I’m pretty sure I have a recording of two separate closers from the early-mid '90s and an opener from the early 2000s somewhere still. When I get a chance I’ll see if I can find them.
Here’s one of the closers from 1994 I’ve got.

I know I have an opener from 2003 somewhere, but haven’t found it thus far. Such a classic tune! :slightly_smiling_face:

Indian dancer girl with a tarp remains to this day to be one of the most bizarre idents I’ve ever seen. Quite different though. Very un-Nine, especially in comparison to the fugly New Millennium Television.
That look has aged much better than the brackets/Ten-in-the-corner era.

At the start of this Temptation video is an example of a Nine signpost from 2006. I didn’t know this version existed.

And this is the warehouse version.

Kudos to the uploader for leaving all the promos and presentation details around each gameshow unaffected.

The original signposts only lasted until May IIRC, not very long. The non-commonwealth games signposts featured scenes of presenters doing “normal” things (e.g. Eddie having a coffee in a cafe).

I actually really like the piano-based backing track for those early 2006 idents, and thought they worked really well with WIN’s local scenery idents.

Hated the rest of the package, though.

Bert’s version of Family Feud may only have lasted 2 seasons, but it was a success despite the poor ratings. Nine axed the show and Bert disappeared from our screens.

Steve Omceke hosting Wheel of Fortune.

Not quite. Bert Newton continued to present 20 to 1, until it was axed in Early 2011.

It was on this day 36 years ago that SBS (then known as Channel 0/28) began transmission: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ6bEZM5dMk

SBS would broadcast on both VHF0 and UHF28 until January 1986 when SBS ceased its VHF transmissions and became a sole UHF broadcaster.

I believe that at the very start it was just known as Channel O.

The first program on SBS was Who are we? with Peter Luck

Amazing how dated WoF looked in its later years, especially compared to its US sibling. Seven just didn’t invest enough cash to keep it interesting IMO, and then Nines re-imagined attempt was just weird (they should have just bought the wheel off Seven rather then make that bizarre, slow thing they made).

The Nine reboot of Wheel was a failure but the US has adopted the Million Dollar version.

It failed to outrate Deal or No Deal and was subsequently axed just a month into its first season

Depends what you mean by “success”… TV networks don’t usually make a habit of axing successful shows.

Mostly, yes, probably just because everyone knew where Channel 0 was on the dial. “28” was probably a bit of a mystery still, given the complete novelty of UHF, although the proper logo did have the words “Channel 0 and Channel 28”.

But some station promos still announced “Channel 0/28”, and I believe the news used to be introduced as “0/28 World News”, although the station ID or continuity announcer(s) might not have mentioned the 28 part.

There was no real uniform branding in TV listings, either. TV Week used “Channel 0/28” but newspapers like The Age, The Herald, The Sun and TV Scene used to just refer to Channel 0.
