Yep, those (fortunately now long-gone) days of not getting the local cricket matches on Nine made a lot of people look for alternatives from other nearby television stations.
Of course, once you leave the capital cities the inverse is true, with the locals erecting large masts to try and receive the additional range of channels from the capital cities. Even now, some 25 or so years after aggregation (in Victoria at least), there are still large masts with VHF antennas in towns like Ballarat, Colac and Traralgon trying to drag in some signal from Melbourne, although many are now somewhat dilapidated and likely not in use anymore.
Here in QLD, down on the Gold Coast you still see in parts two VHF aerials on some houses, one aiming for Brisbane and the other trying to pick up RTN8 from Lismore (now UHF with digital). Again, with the advent of the local transmissions and aggregation these have become more or less redundant, though some on the Coast use reception from NNSW transmitters to enjoy a timeshift of one hour on programming during the daylight saving months
Opening of WIN TV’s Queensland service 31 Dec 1990 featured Bruce Gordon and a typical Nine network ident. Nine produced these each year for broadcast just after midnight New Year’s Day.
Recording is not the best as I recorded if off RTQ 0 Bunya Mountains.
I thought SBS had the rights to Southpark in the early 2000s. Also, there’s something misfitting about a fancy arthouse movie opener introducing the Southpark movie.
I think the last network to do movie intros was Ten back in 2013 for their Saturday Movie.
The 2002-05 era of presentation was probably the last time that Nine regularly did movie intros, but they did do “Sunday Drama” intros for maybe the first week or two of House Husbands in September 2012.
SBS did and still do have the rights to the show. The movie was distributed by Warner Bros so Nine automatically got the rights. I thought it was odd too, South Park would’ve been more suited to Ten.
The thing is this was supposed to be a similar style show to Geordie Shore. It was the complete opposite. I think if it was similar to Geordie Shore it could have been a moderate hit.
The sad thing is that with the general decline in TV over the past few years, those ratings would probably be classed as a “hit” if it premiered this year!
Although in general, I’m kind of glad that The Shire (not to mention Being Lara Bingle & Brynee’s Bedazzled Life or whatever that show on Seven was called) didn’t succeed in the ratings. The only good thing about the show were all the negative comments online, some of which were hilarious!
Ten’s on screen graphics package was so much better back then, the animation & effects look great. It’s a shame their current one is so poor & boring in comparison.
