General News Events - Coverage Discussion

Ah you see no one cares about a random neighbour when you’ve got two police! Sadly that’s how it goes.

A small Queensland Police contingent was present at the pre-match ceremony of Australia v South Africa cricket test at The Gabba this morning.

There was an emotional tribute then a moment’s silence for the victims of the shooting, followed by a long round of applause for the police officers on the field.

I haven’t been sure where to post this one but I think here will do, especially after the tribute this morning before the cricket.

It was tough watching the officers and the Commissioner herself as they remembered the fallen as yesterday was the one year anniversary of the Hillcrest Primary School tragedy a year ago here and where similar ceremonies took place prior to sporting events.
I know it did make it to the national media as a mention of the anniversary but there’s been a fair bit of coverage down here this week as expected and seeing the reaction with Queensland brings back a lot of memories and similarities with the two tragedies.

I drove along the highway yesterday and I saw an ambulance speed past and without warning I had flashbacks to being at work as the police cars and ambulances raced past in the 60km/h zone outside my work at speeds of around double that. Then just as I went to bed last night at 11pm, 2 helicopters flew overhead which doesn’t happen often but on this day last year there had been heaps.

As the media attention decreases the pain and suffering will still continue for many and healing will be slow but it will happen. My thoughts, prayers and condolences are with those affected in the communities, in any of the emergency services and just if any are suffering with the terrible tragedy. If anybody needs, please utilise the services of Lifeline or any of the other organisations to help people process and deal with their grief and thoughts.

How are they similar? One was premeditated murder by crazed psychos and the other a tragic accident.

Two tragedies resulting in losses of life which could not have been foreseen by people (with the exception of the perpetrators) and ones which will have ongoing affects for the affected community, first responders and emergency services and for many all across Australia - especially with the significant media coverage.

Live coverage of the memorial service for Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold confirmed for Wednesday morning.

Nine coverage from 10am until 12pm with Andrew Lofthouse and Alison Ariotti anchoring. At least in Brisbane and Gold Coast. Potentially rest of Queensland too.

Also saw a flash on tonight’s 7 News confirming their coverage on Wednesday from 9.30am on 7Two (although now likely on main Seven channel due to early cricket finish).

Does anyone know what time it actually starts?

Articles have said 10am previous, so imagine coverage would actually start maybe a minute or two before the actual service begins. Very little preamble likely required and needed etc…

Alison Ariotti and Andrew Lofthouse really annoying me. They started coverage with a statement something like, “We’re not here today to go through the horrific events of what happened, but honour the lives of the Constables”… then all they have done for 20mins since is go over and over and over what “might’ve” happened. Ffs. Just shut up.
