We were trying out something called aeroshot in Round 1 of the AFL this year. It’s a little bit like a spidercam. We have been working with the AFL about getting onto the ground after goals to get tighter shots of players. That’s something that seems to resonate with the audience. Our directors are always looking at the best way to cut the game. What is the best experience for the viewer?

Our focus with the AFL is already on next year where we have the biggest opportunity we’ve ever had. We will be able to produce all matches every round with commentary, and graphics. It’s the opportunity we have been waiting for.

According to this article from Fox Sports, Mark Howard and Dwayne Russell were to have co-called the Suns-Giants match, with Anthony Hudson doing the Pies-Hawks.

However, upon watching both matches yesterday, only Howard did the Suns-Giants match while Dwayne did the Pies-Hawks match. Wonder if there was a last-minute change to the roster?

Caroline Wilson said on the radio on Friday night that it had been a tough week for Anthony Hudson, so that might have something to do with Huddo not calling on Sunday.

Couple of takes from that:

  1. What on earth is happening on Saturday with multiple double-ups
  • Will Dwayne call from studio for twilight then make a mad dash to Marvel for night, or call both from Marvel?
  • Will Gaz host and call from MCG for the arvo game then get to studio for twilight or host and call both from the G
  • How will Cam Mooney be on the boundary in Sydney at twilight and Marvel for the night game?
  1. No Huddo
  • Surprising considering he’s rostered on 3AW for Friday so unless he’s busy with family/personal matters I can’t see that being anything other than a mistake
  1. Ralph only on 1 Sunday game
  • Also surprising considering he usually does all the Sunday games from the studio or ON SITE for Melbourne games.
  1. Very late start for Bounce
  • Surprised at the late start for Bounce with the Perth game likely not finishing until about 9pm AEST, good timing for Perth viewers but maybe not so for Melbourne - possibly a slight ratings hit this week for Bounce and probably a large-ish hit for First Crack

It could be a misprint. There would be no way in hell Dwayne would run from the studio to Marvel in (say) 20 minutes, or however long it takes to get from the Fox studio to Marvel.

But if he is indeed on double duty, he would have to call both from Marvel.

That’s also a possibility.

I also remember one instance when Brenton Speed did double duty across the AFL and NRL, once he finished calling the former sport he would have a half-hour break before doing the latter. In this case he would’ve called the games from a studio, but I don’t think it was NEP.

Speed currently calls three codes of football – A-League, AFL and NRL, and he even called an AFL and NRL game on the same day.
