Fox get shunted to a radio box at most grounds while 7 get Priority with the main commentary box. It doesn’t really make much of a difference from a commentary point of view, but is awkward to look at on air.
Never thought I’d consider going to 7 for my footy. The commentary on Kayo is so biased it’s unbelievable. The race caller is terrible and everyone else is barracking for Richmond. David King is painful.
There’s always Seven, buddy… and the ‘race caller’ you speak of actually has a name. Please show a bit of respect.
Matt Hill is a great caller and a great addition to the coverage. When hes teamed with Huddo it reminds me of the Bruce / Dennis days.
Get over it, so I didn’t use a sports caller’s name! Read my post properly, I hate 7 but was considering going there because I was pissed off with the inferior callers on Kayo last night. Commentators are not gods and I am sure we are all entitled to our opinions on them. Matt Hill IMO calls football like he’s calling a horserace! By the way I’m not your buddy!
That’s your opinion, mine is different. I don’t watch or listen to horse racing where he is probably a good race caller but I don’t like him commentating football.
Anyway it was all the commentators in the 1st 1/4 barracking for Richmond, that pissed me off, especially David King. As Melbourne got on top he eased of his barracking and remembered there was two teams playing. The teams playing were Melbourne and Richmond or the Demons and Tigers, not King’s “Tiges” and “Them or they” when referring to Melbourne.
I really don’t get the hype around Matt Hill’s commentary - its good, but it’s also amongst some pretty turgid alternatives.
It’s clear, accurate and conveys excitement. He is not one of the egocentric boys club that fill the call with in-jokes and pointless anecdotes while getting half the players’ names wrong.
Thats an incredibly low barrier for entry. He stands well above the rest, but that doesn’t mean that its great commentary.
I just don’t get the element of excitement - its almost monotone.
-Not to harp on about Matt Hill but one of the reasons I had a problem with him last night was that he got a number of players names wrong during the call.
I stand by my comment about Matty Hill but i have to correct my other comment. Its Huddo and Gerard that remind me of the Bruce / Dennis days. As is the call today.
Like many, he’s better on radio (and frankly better at calling racing).
I do think we’ve lost the art of good television callers.
Partly because of the lack of opportunities. Many have to spend their entire career on radio, and there’s not many players who move into pbp anymore, given opinion is much easier to gain notoriety out of. And those who are locked in for life seemingly are, generally speaking, quite poor/not elite, like BT or JB.
Fox Footy seemingly trying to have the scoreboard at full length for as long as possible now.
Although they did this over the last two weeks, they were able to fill the space with ‘ads’ for the Good Friday Appeal, and then the Anzac Appeal. No such causes this week, so tonight they’ve gone with spruiking tomorrow’s game. Presumably they’ll promote super saturday tomorrow night, not sure about games that get shown on 7 interstate over the weekend, though.
To be honest it looks better but maybe I’m used to US sports where they use score bottoms. I found the 3/4 width distracting more than the full score bottom.
Yeah, they needed to either make it full width or shrink it down. Didn’t expect the change to happen mid-season, but I’m glad it was made.
On the topic of commentary boxes for the shared games, the new social media bird kindly posted this one of the team last night, you can see the very obvious layout of the Radio comm box behind the fake wall.
It’s obviously not a radio comms box, because none of them are more than 2-3 people wide at most.
It is more obviously a corporate box.
Bit inappropriate, no?
Would have to be, especially given the space between the table and the end of the box which would be right up against glass rather than have such a big gap.
Fox has quietly dropped its 12 hour coverage from the studio on Saturdays. The super Saturdays crew only going from 7pm now. Before that is anchored by the call team. Noticed it last week too.
(Coverage now starts at 1230 instead of 1200 as well)
