Fox Cricket

Looks like the new graphics we’ve seen so far aren’t Fox Cricket’s - both WBBL games today (Fox exclusives) had last year’s graphics with some minor tweaks

The runs target was in a graphic on the top left of the screen and I noticed some changes in how they used the lower centre section

(David) Warner is about to launch his career as a commentator with Fox Cricket over the summer. It all starts on Monday in Melbourne with an ODI clash between Australia and Pakistan.

Warner promises to be riveting television. He has been a lightning rod for controversy at times during his playing career and he has vowed to tell it like it is as he steps into the commentary box.

If it means upsetting some former teammates, that comes with the territory. He is happy to take their calls if they have an issue.

“From my perspective, I always want to make sure that people understand that nothing is personal,” Warner said.

“If I ever be critical or anything of someone, I’ll always speak to them beforehand or if they want to have a chat with me about some comments, they’ve got my number. They can call me up.”

Noticing that there are more proper Fox broadcast game this season. In the past, whilst it may have been on Fox, they were basically live streams which were identified by having cricket.com.au logo in the top left corner. Must have been stipulated in the new contract.

Fox Cricket have added the target in the top left hand corner of their coverage.

Can’t say I’m a fan, it’s quite large and a bit distracting (especially being nowhere near the rest of the scorecard).

It almost feels like they meant to only have it there for only a few seconds then stuffed up.

For game 2, the target score was back in the score graphics right above the overs count.

Fox Sports looks to the NFL for inspiration this cricket season

The technology will be informative and additional, rather than intrusive, according to Fox Sport managing director, Steve Crawley, who informs Mumbrella that he’s “not all that big into that sticking scores and that into the sky”.

Crawley explains that, as with cricket, you can be waylaid by the figures: “I think the best thing that I want us to do is tell the story and entertain our audience. Everyone always says how many cameras you’ve got. But it’s not a case of the number of cameras. It’s a case of getting it right.”

“We’ve done a lot of work on innovation because we figure it’s not going to get any bigger than this and we’ve got India, England, India. It’s an opportunity for us,” he explains.

“I’ve never had a crew of commentators like this going into a series like three in a row like that. So, we’ve tried to get the innovations up to reflect that as well.”

Crawley spent some time with the NFL producers in the US earlier this year for the NRL Vegas round and studied how they operate.

“They produce within an inch of their lives,” he marvels. “Like they fly – they have their own planes – they go to a city and they run through their production line by line. Ours isn’t like that. It’s unbelievable. They go through it all, and then they go through with the local media, everything.

“As I said, we’re not like that, but it’s very different now to what it was ten years ago.”

In terms of a global audience, Crawley said this will be the biggest ever watching Fox Cricket. Broadcasters taking the feed elsewhere decide whether to use the Fox Cricket commentary feed or provide their own.

“India will have their own commentary team they’re trying to pinch some of our commentators. We’re being awkward on that because we want them to be exclusive to us and heard only through us.”

Getting the graphics right
A feature of the Fox Cricket coverage this summer is sure to be the graphics. There has been a change behind the scenes with that. Crawley explained.
“We’ve now done what the NRL did. We’ve taken it in-house and I’m really proud of the job that they’re doing and that they’ve done.
“It’s not a case of saving money. We spend the same amount of money but we get more for our buck because they work for us.”
Fox Cricket also handles its own stats. “They’re all our people, the stats people. We’ve always had that and it’s unique in Australian television and we cover all sports.”

Will be interesting to see what extra graphics & changes they will have
