Sorry that set just looks terrible. Worse than 9s sports cave.

Following up from reports by AFR and SMH on Monday, The Australian says today that FIFA is seeking $100 million for the next World Cup broadcast rights, and bids are expected from all of Australia’s major FTA networks as well as SBS and Optus. In a twist, Football Australia could try to cash in on the sport’s popularity and also bid for World Cup rights, which it would then bundle with Socceroos and Matildas games to sell into the local market. The report says that FIFA officials were in Australia this week to launch separate tenders for the broadcast rights for 2026 men’s World Cup in North America and 2027 women’s World Cup (hosting nations to be revealed in May 2024), and sources say FIFA wants the bids to come in by September 19.

Well if they end up winning the tournament, then you can look back at this match as the wake up call they needed to spur them to the ultimate success.

FIFA have confirmed that the bid submission deadline is 6pm AEST on September 19. As such, we’ll likely find out before the end of the year who will have rights to the next men’s and women’s World Cups.

One other thing - the tender processes will allow interested parties to bid for the 2030 men’s WC and 2031 women’s WC as well. This means either or both could be sold as a two WC package.
