FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Coverage

Wednesday’s semi final will be between Australia and England.

There will be massive TV audiences in both countries no doubt.

I predicted The Ashes would allow 9 to run off into the lead and then go on to win the year. I seriously never expected the women’s World Cup to rate like it has.

I never expected the crowds to be the way they have been at the matches not featuring Aus. The crowds have been crazy.

I was at the Colombia vs England match last night. The crowd was amazing and made it a great experience.

When were the rights decided for the World Cup? If this had been only a few years ago, it would likely have been tucked away on a multichannel somewhere and there would have been some interest but after a few years of finally getting coverage for women’s sport and new leagues with the AFLW and NRLW and the Aussie womens cricket teams going well too it has all just turned into a big time bomb that feels like it’s going off at the perfect time. I doubt Seven would have expected it to have been this successful too.

Monique and Matt on Weekend Sunrise saying “early numbers” are 4.5million for last night’s Matilda’s game on 7, and another 500 000 on 7+

Staggering numbers for a football match men’s or women’s beating any event out of its path even the late Queen’s funeral last year. Only the 2011 Royal Wedding (6.01 million and shared on all networks) had a bigger number than last night’s match.

I was walking past a venue that had the game on the big screen, theirs was clearly on 7 but a venue nearby must have had Optus as we could hear their crowds cheering a few seconds before the venue i was outside. 7 must have been on a slight delay?

We noticed the same travelling to Stadium Australia on the bus. A group in front of us were watching Optus on their phone and we were watching 7 Plus on my phone. It was about a 20 second delay.

What was really odd was that the live venue at Homebush. There were two big screens near Stadium Australia which were out of sync and when I checked my phone, 7 Plus was further behind both of those. Strange.

It wasn’t as severe as that from my observation (in Adelaide btw) but it was certainly a few seconds delay.

If there was a delay for the Seven coverage they must have been streaming 7Plus because the FTA signal was ahead of Optus and up to 1 minute ahead of 7Plus. The closest to live that you could get would be 612 ABC AM signal in Brisbane that would be ahead of digital TV and DAB+ radio.

Possibly. It was in the cbd so maybe streaming is more reliable than FTA reception.

Is there a way to know how many watched last night on Optus sport

No, SVOD platforms are not measured by Nielsen TAM AU (except for Foxtel’s Kayo which recently the parties finally agreed to a deal due to a large consumption of eg. AFL and NRL now via that service). Unless Optus care to share publicly, hello Clive Dickens, how’s it going :raised_hand_with_fingers_splayed: He did recently reveal like a Top 20 list, but rankings only no audience data, 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup was actually a fair way down below events such as 2020 Euros.

The big win for Seven is a guaranteed two more Matildas matches either way.

Ideally the final is best, but even if they lose the semi there will still be a huge audience interested in the third place play off.

Huge for women’s sport either way.
