FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Coverage

Regardless of whether or not 15 was the maximum available to sub-licence, i really doubt whether any commercial broadcaster would have sought more at the time (for FTA broadcast, they may have got more for streaming only). The only broadcaster I’d see confidently pushing for the whole tournament on FTA would have been SBS. The tournament being local would have been of little relevance, especially if the networks didn’t seem it to be worth buying.

It’s easy to say now with the benefit of rating numbers that 15 was too few games and no doubt seven will now have desired access to more but would they have taken the punt when they did the deal with Optus?

This also raises questions about the sustainability and practicality of wanting any sporting event that is mildly successful on FTA. We need to accept that there will be events that are partly or wholly behind some kind of paywall, regardless of operator and the popularity of the event, it’s simply the reality of modern broadcasting

Especially a risk given football just doesn’t give a commercial network space for ads. Even if Seven are getting millions of viewers, they went commercial free during the actual match, other than the small number of banner ads.

SBS are in the situation where that’s about the amount of ads they show anyway - but for Seven very few matches would rate well enough that the ad revenue would be enough to cover versus even moderately well rating alternative programming.

A special edition of 7NEWS will immediately follow the match in each state (check local guides).

The live sport action then continues on Seven when Melbourne takes on Carlton at the MCG, from 7.30pm AEST on Channel 7, 7mate and 7plus.

The following matches will round out Seven’s AFL Round 22 coverage:

Seven Melbourne Managing Director and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “This Saturday will be a historic moment for all Australians, and the biggest night of sport since Sydney 2000 as the mighty Matildas look to capitalise on their inspiring World Cup campaign.

“Between the Matildas and finals footy coming early for AFL with the Carlton v Melbourne thriller, it doesn’t get bigger than Saturday night across the screens of Seven.

“Like the rest of Australia, Seven is right behind the Matildas and we have worked closely with the AFL to adjust bounce times for certain games on Saturday to ensure no one misses a minute of what will be a massive night for both women’s football and AFL,” he said.

So far, Seven’s coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ has reached 9.25 million broadcast viewers plus another 1.67 million on 7plus. More than 185 million minutes of content has been watched on 7plus to date.

AFL is negotiating to show the World Cup game on the big screen at the MCG ahead of the Carlton v Melbourne game.

In Sydney at Olympic Park, fans attending the 8pm game will be able to turn up early to watch the 5pm game on the big screen as well as other live sights.

The problem will be what happens when the soccer goes into extra time? Both Carlton and Melbourne teams have to enter the field at 7.15pm for the 7.30pm bounce.

Also, it will be interesting to see if the scoreboard at The Gabba shows any soccer updates during Brisbane v Adelaide match, which takes place simultaneously as Australia v France at Lang Park.

The biggest night of sport in two decades? Okay…

MCG will broadcast the game on the big screen, but so far the gates open at 5:30. The Matilda’s match kick off at 5pm.

So it will be interesting if the MCG will open the gates around 4:30-4:45 or show the first 30mins of the soccer to an audience of 0 until gates open at 5:30

Apparently the scoreboards operated as normal when crowds were fully locked during Covid so…

Won’t be an audience of 0, the MCC opens at 5 so there’ll be a few people around.

While most people’s attention is on Australia v France tomorrow, the quarter-finals start today in New Zealand.

(Japan v Sweden will also be shown on 7two/7mate and streamed on 7plus)

Apart from the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, the SCG and outside Optus Stadium in Perth will also show Australia v France live tomorrow.

Might be taking the Optus feed instead of CH7.

I’m (like everyone I’d think) on board the Matildas train so to speak, but what are Seven basing that on? The event status itsself? General buzz? TV ratings? Crowds? All of the above?

If ratings (which seems to be what everyone including much of the media has been discussing this week - great for us MS types but maybe not so if you’re an OzTAM executive), are they suggesting it’ll top their own 2003 Rugby World Cup final and 2005 Australian Open final? 2001 Wimbledon final? 2001 FINA swimming? Multiple AFL (such as 2005, 2006, 2012, 2016, 2020 & 2021) and NRL GFs and SOOs? 2006 Melbourne 2006 Comm Games? Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics? 2006, 2007, 2017 Aus Open finals? 2009 Aus Open women’s qtr final? 2022 Australian Open women’s final? Cricket World Cup?

All of which have done low-high 2m metro or over 3m metro broadcast alone.

Any outdoor showing has to show Optus’ coverage - Seven don’t have the rights to sub-license for public viewings

By all reports, Optus have been quite open to allowing it too (and the process to get approval is reasonably straight forward) - one of the challenges has been getting appropriate viewing equipment

7 did a mini cross promotion for the Matilda’s game during the AFL half time. They mentioned that the Matilda’s game will be shown on the big screen at the G until the AFL games starts BUT will remain on the other screen around the G until the Matilda’s game is concluded (if it goes to extra time + penalty shoot out)

SEN will broadcast the Matildas match live on most of its stations, including SENQ Brisbane and 1629 Adelaide rather than the AFL game between the Lions and the Crows. The AFL will be carried on SEN Fanatic and SEN app across Australia.

ABC Radio will broadcast the match via ABC Listen app only, with normal AFL and NRL coverage taking priority on analogue radio.

Edit: the match will also be broadcast on ABC 702 Sydney and 612 Brisbane.

Optus have said if you count their viewers the round of 16 match rated higher than the 2020 and 2021 AFL GFs
