2 games in the 1 ratings week. 7 have this week in the bag.
I don’t have an issue with Optus scooping up a large number of the games for themselves especially when the FTAs have seemingly dropped the ball.
Would have been a perfect event for the ABC and/or SBS if they were better funded and allowed to compete more in line with some of the European public broadcasters like the BBC or Germany’s ARD/ZDF.
Where Optus has missed a trick though in my view is not offering a ‘World Cup pass’ at a rate of say $10-$15 for the tournament- at that price point I would imagine they would have got a few subs than they would actually have now.
The age article above stated that “Seven picked up 15 of the 64 matches in a free-to-air licensing arrangement for less than $5 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal” so for another $5-$7mill AUD, 7 could of broadcasted another 49 matches?
Graphic now saying coverage begins at 4pm (with voiceover saying across the screens of Seven).
Re Sat arvo
I think it will be 4.30pm for Sydney and Brisbane, as the main channel will show the Swans-Suns AFL clash (Foxtel production) live at 1.30pm. Other states will start at 4pm AEST.
how much pre-game does 7 normally have?
It’s been an hour for Matildas games and 30 minutes for the other games they’ve shown.
Maybe - just because Optus secured it for the price they did doesn’t necessarily mean that another broadcaster would have been able to achieve the same price.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing - I doubt anyone would have predicted the level of success the tournament has had in attracting fans (and viewers) and that would have fed into who wanted the rights and how much they’d be willing to pay.
Looks like CH7 pregame will be an hour long. Kickoff at 5pm Saturday AEST.
I think we are also looking at rose tinted glasses with the group stages. There was a lot of average games that would have battled to attract a wider audience imho. The balance is about right.
Seven Brisbane has some interesting decisions to make now on Saturday arvo / evening for what to do with the Matildas Coverage and what channel it will go on.
With a Gabba Lions v Crows game at 4.35pm on 7mateHD and horse racing occupying 7two until at least 5pm, logically 7HD will have the pre-game and you would assume the whole Matildas match however 7News at 6pm will have to be bumped which they are always loathed to do but i can’t see any other option as they wouldn’t want use 7TWO here in Brissy for the Matildas as it isn’t in HD and looking at the ratings aspect, they surely want it on the main 7HD channel…
Matildas v Denmark: #1 program of 2023
Reaches 6.54 million viewers; average audience 3.56 million
Australia was captivated last night as the Matildas triumphed over Denmark to advance to the Quarter Finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ and scored the highest rating TV program of 2023.
The Matildas’ 2-0 victory reached 6.54 million people on Seven and 7plus, with an average audience during the game of 3.56 million, making it the #1 show of the year.
The game’s average audience of 3.56 million included a national broadcast audience of 3.18 million viewers on Seven (2.29 million in the capital cities) and another 384,000 viewers on 7plus – a record for an individual event on 7plus.
Matildas v Denmark was the #1 broadcast program last night nationally and in the capital cities in all people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.
The pre-game program was the #2 broadcast program nationally in 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s and #3 in all people (1.53 million broadcast viewers). The post-game program was #3 nationally in 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s and #5 in all people (1.22 million broadcast viewers).
7plus ranked #1 in BVOD viewing yesterday, with a 58.9% share.
The game peaked at 3.75 million viewers on broadcast and dominated its broadcast timeslot, scoring a 71.3% commercial audience share in total people, 74.5% in 25 to 54s and 78.5% in 16 to 39s.
So far, Seven’s coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ has reached 9.25 million broadcast viewers plus another 1.67 million on 7plus. More than 185 million minutes of content has been watched on 7plus to date.
The Matildas will now face off against the winner of the France v Morocco game tonight in the Quarter Final, to be played in Brisbane this Saturday, 12 August.
France v Morocco: From 8.30pm AEST tonight, on 7mate and 7plus
Matildas v Winner of France v Morocco: From 4.00pm AEST, Saturday, 12 August, on Seven and 7plus
They will probably have Matilda’s on 7 then 7news after. Post match coverage of the Matilda’s on 7mate?
There will be outrage if 7 puts the Matilda’s on 7Two.
The question will be, does 7 put the Matilda’s on 7mate in SA & VIC because of AFL.
I think VIC will have Matilda’s on 7 because the AFL starts at 7:25.
football or soccer?
Football will be on one channel and football on the other . I’d say that for this the Matildas will get precedence and AFL will be on 7mate.
7’s other quarter final is the Friday 11am kickoff between Spain & Netherlands on 7mate
Even though the tv guides show this, during the post game show about 5mins ago, they mentioned how 7 was showing the Japan v Sweden game (which makes more sense since it’s an evening game). So I guess nothing is confirmed until 7 fully updates their schedules tmr
Disagree - 15 games airing on FTA TV isn’t a sufficient package and that was obvious from the moment the Seven sublicensing deal was announced.
For a home Women’s World Cup, the minimum should have been 1 game a day on FTA TV.
One game a week with the match of the day would be sufficient enough. SBS in the past only aired Matildas matches and the entire knockout stage from my memory
