Fetch TV

Is PBS America distributed outside the UK?

Not sure but it would be a good opportunity for Fetch.

I see Fetch are broadcasting a handful of internet channels now.

Yep, added with the latest software update.

It looks like Telstra prefer Fetch to Roku. I don’t blame them, it’s a far superior device for FTA, streaming and recording.

So Telstra TV users would move over to Fetch. Very interesting.

What could this mean for:

a) Other telcos?
b) TelstraTV?
c) Potentially seeing Fox/Streamotion streaming services added?

I think there is one you missed - where does Telstra’s investment in Foxtel fit in this, or is this an early sign that perhaps they’re looking at exiting?

Telstra are obviously keen to have some sort of presence in the “home entertainment stack” - but they’ve been conflicted in the past thanks in part to their Foxtel ownership (and frankly some shit hardware)

Will Optus drop Fetch then? Or pull their channels?

a) I don’t think there will be much change with Optus, iinet and Aussie Broadband still wanting content as part of internet/telephone bundles. Fetch is a good product so they would still want to keep offering it to their customers.

b) Telstra TV will probably move to the Fetch platform, with the same channels/apps that are already on there, for their customers (1.9 million according to the SMH article). That will mean Fetch has around 2.5 million customers in total.

c) Who knows

I was meaning the other way. Would Telstra potentially kick others off?

They could, but why would they want to? Owning a stake in Fetch means they get a cut of Optus/Iinet/ABB’s monthly subs

Could also mean Fetch will secure more content.

The article speculates about this but it’s no secret that Telstra has been looking to offload its share in Foxtel for quite while.

It hasn’t been as profitable as it was, for quite a while now. They predicted that streaming services would impact Foxtel severely and have said that they will start losing money. They resisted a call from NewsCorp to invest more money into Foxtel so an exit is highly likely.

Telstra have said in the past that they’re constantly reviewing the investment and the thinking has been for a while that they’d use the proposed Foxtel IPO to at least start the exit process yet the IPO hasn’t seemed to get much traction

If this is how the streamotion platforms (kayo/binge/flash) get on Fetch, it makes Fetch a pretty decent option for an all round device

My suspicion is that if this goes ahead we’ll likely see a Telstra-specific device powered by the Fetch

I don’t think this will happen. It could end up in court.

No I mean they would not renew their contracts or something.

I don’t think Telstra would do that, it would piss off a lot of Optus, iiNet and ABB customers, and like I said, it could prompt court action from these providers.

When I switch the Fetch box on these days, it starts showing whatever channel you were on, then after a few seconds, the screen backs out and the sound is gone for a full second.

It then starts again as normal. Does anyone have this problem with their Fetch Box?
