Fast Food/Takeaways and Restaurants

Yeah, they’re not too bad.

There was a Snag Stand at Melbourne Central at the corner of Swanston and La Trobe streets but it closed late last year. I bought a dog there once and it was tasty.
This afternoon I went to Hungry Jack’s to buy a burger but turned back when I noticed a 10% holiday surcharge on the menu. So I went to McDonald’s and bought a wrap instead. I think HJ is the only outlet which has this surcharge.

I noticed that lately as well, they never previous did this, only pizza places ever did. Makes them appear them very cheap compared to Maccas.

Hungry Jacks are the cheaper alternative to McDonalds (company wise as their food when done right is superior). As a previous manager there in my earlier years, all Managers would work public holidays in crew positions as we were on salary and didn’t receive penalty payments thus allowing limited crew to work and be paid penalties. They obviously figure this is a better strategy now.

They are getting crucified (pardon the timing) on social media.

Even cheaper than getting the 14 year olds on $6/hour plus penalty to work on public holidays? That’s pretty sad. :frowning:

I find HJ’s lacks the hygiene and professionalism (hah) of McDonalds. The kids on drive thru (and adults) often wear the blue gloves while serving and handling cash, which clearly is not allowed.

Not surprised to see HJs doing this considering the side of politics it’s owner strongly supports.

This is so true. It’s something they haven’t been able to master after all these years. Even Burger King stores aren’t as poorly maintained.

Any company that pays salary does this. Woolies, Coles etc… have been doing this for as long as I’ve been working and thats 15 years.

Even where I am now in logistics the managers work public holidays on a rotating roster (so the same managers aren’t working every PH)

I’m aware. My point was going to the 10% surcharge now being charged by HJ’s.

Wasn’t there a thing a while back where public holiday surcharges had to be included in the menu price, not displayed as an addon percentage?

Doesn’t really matter though, I bought something at a HJ on Saturday with the surcharge, my bigger complaint was how uncrispy the hash browns were, not the 10% extra.

No reason for the surcharge now. Surely its easier to just raise prices of everything slightly to compensate for higher PH/Sunday rates

They should permanently raise the prices 10% on the menu and give me a 10% discount anytime it isn’t a public holiday to make me feel valued.

Bit worried about Oporto in the QV building in Melbourne. Had a bite there on Saturday before heading to the footy, took forever to serve 2 SINGLE Bondi Burgers. Admittedly there was only 1 person cooking and one person in the front which to me is the worrying bit. Fortunately it wasn’t that busy but the lady behind would have waited forever for her order (and the blokes before me probably waited for a while as well). At least it tasted slightly better than the Schnitzel burger at the MCG which was dry and overpriced.

Saturday was a public holiday right? Probably just cutting staff to keep their costs down

Yeah probably minimal staff on a quiet weekend. Also from my experience QV gets really busy during the week at lunch but is pretty quiet on weekends (I assume most people shopping/out and about in the city would be more likely to go bourke st or emporium/melb central). They were probably on skeleton staff and you possibly visited at a time that someone was on a break too.

I don’t believe there are any Saturdays that are public holidays this year (unlike last year when ANZAC Day was a Saturday). If there was we’d be reminded at work that there is NO long weekend either.

Is the Saturday before Easter Sunday a new public holiday?
