Digital TV Technical Discussion

Not sure exactly what time it happened, but we woke up to high definition from the ABC this morning in Adelaide.

If nobody else has done it I’ll get some bitrates this evening after work.

Waiting for the Nine and 10 Networks to Upgrade all of their Metro Stations to MPEG-4 HD and Swtich off Standard Definition Broadcasts.

You’ll be waiting for a lifetime.

I’d just like some sound consistency on 9Now. Always have to turn my TV to 20 just to hear it, while 12 suffices for all other networks’ streaming channels. Also 9Now often pixelated badly and goes back to SD. It’s certainly not my FTTP connection.

And this is precisely why I still prefer terrestrial/PVR for free to air, more reliable etc.

Streaming is good for shows not on terrestrial, but anything that is on the terrestrial signal, I’ll record/watch via that.

It could be the CVC backhaul though. The contention on most connections are way too high, and as a free platform, Nine are also likely on the cheaper side of the CDN options for delivery. I’d be interested if Stan Sport streams are fine while 9Now has problems.

To bang a well worn drum, it’s still very dumb that FTA television isn’t delivered via IP multicast - the FTTP and HFC networks are perfect for it - the NTDs even have the extra ports, and you could replicate the metro/regional license areas pretty effectively along the POI boundaries.

And I hate it how 7plus/9now/10play are always on a 45 second delay. Will we ever see 4K streaming free to air??

You might need to wait 4K years

This is because more people will complain about buffering than being on a delay that unless there is live sport on most won’t notice.
To lower the delay/latency means less buffer and tolerance for unstable connections.

The BBC are currently running a trial which has reportedly got it down to 3 seconds but only on certain devices.

So even if things improve “progress” still won’t get us back to almost 100% live as the analogue signal was.

Has ABC Entertains and ABC News changed to MPEG4 HD yet in WA and NT?

Was meant to happen today.

Tuesday 17 June – Western Australia and Northern Territory

By the way, are SCA completely out of the game right now? Have they sold all to Seven and Ten yet?

This is what Seven said most recently:

“Our ongoing commitment to regional markets is evidenced by our recent negotiation with Southern Cross Austereo to acquire its regional licences in Tasmania, Darwin, Spencer Gulf, Broken Hill, Mt Isa and Remote, Central and Eastern Australia. The acquisition is expected to be complete by 30 June 2025.”
