@Moe digital would be far more interesting. moedigital
Foe those of you that miss the early days of great songs and no ads around the More/OMG! era (like me), you may recall Koool digital. They still broadcast but as a streaming station, it is run by a guy who worked on it’s original incarnation. (Based in outer Melbourne)
Also, just the last month or 2, they have started to play a lot of 12" remixes, probably every 4th or 5th song. And a lot of them are by Aussie artists too which makes a pleasant change. You can view the playlist on Radiobox app.
And yes, I used to listen to Kimmy on More back in the day too.
Edit: I also miss the original Old Skool
Nige! Is on LiSTNR.
I use to love Koool! A lot of great retro tracks, and was pissed that Hutchy canned it
There’s just so much potential with digital that has been massively under utilised.
I listen to a DAB station (Dance Hits) that has a breakfast show, news, celebrity gossip, laughs and announcers right throughout the day. Yeah sure it’s voice tracked across 14 different stations with varying formats, but it still feels like real radio. Not the mp3 jukebox style of DAB+ we have here.
It appears Disrupt Radio finally went under and now owes creditors money including SEN who are taking them to court,
color me shocked. they were targeting the complete wrong market. Entrepreneurs (and my father in law is one) don’t spend all day listening to the radio. they scan the fin review whilst in the gym at 6am prior to starting work at 7 and working all day and half the night. they would have been better off as a podcast platform
When will people realise that dedicated online/DAB+ stations cannot succeed financially.
DAB+ stations such as CADA and smooth only stay afloat because of their sister FM stations. The rest of DAB+ & online stations are practically automated.
Mostly true, but over time things will probably change.
There are already exceptions in the UK, like Virgin, and KISSTORY now rating double what the original FM station rates (which has now mostly been taken off FM). I think KISSTORY might still be on FM in one market, but it’s national numbers are large.
No we’re not the UK, their operators know what they’re doing with DAB and Online.
I do agree though, niche stations are never going to survive on DAB.
New car has digital radio, I’m in Brisbane and it’s full of sports stations! Could be better put to use. Like HD radio for example.
It was worth a try though. And it was genuinely something different. I was never a fan because it took SEN fanatic away from DAB+. When I did tune in though, the content wasn’t too bad, though clearly deteriorated overtime (and certainly after the initial hype with Sir Bob).
Disrupt’s demise is indicative of DAB+ more broadly. And while you make a good point re: digital stations being ‘practically automated’, I’d hasten to add so are CADA and Smooth pretty much.
DAB+ Digital Radio is effectively the Australian equivalent of HD Radio.
How many tries do we need to see?
EON Sports Radio should’ve been the first and only lesson in this.
And MyMP only survived because SEN propped it up.
Yes that’s true.
Let’s face it. The Canadians ditched DAB in 2010. In 2025 we should probably look at doing the same.
I don’t see the point in listening to 32kps jukeboxes. ACMA suggests that 64kps is the equivalent of a quality FM transmission. And yet how many stations do we have at 64 and above? Sure there might be a few ABC Classic FM listeners who enjoy the improved sound quality and 4BH certainly does sound superb at 96kps, but they are certainly the exceptions.
Time to pull the plug on the whole thing.
I think DAB+ is still useful particularly for listening to AM stations, listening to them on AM is painful at times with all of the electrical noise around.
But for the FM/music only stations, the bit rate is too low for the stations to be truly enjoyable, FM or streaming with a high quality pair of headphones/car stereo is much better.
I believe its attached to 4CRB judging by the web address and similar being registered to the 4CRB Tech
I did wonder who was running it, thanks.
Melbourne has a new channel
ACR ChineseRadio
Also, Niche Radio 2, Radio Maria Ital and Rete Italia are still there, but have moved, not exactly sure whether they’re on a different multiplex or the same one, but something has changed. There are two entries for each on my radio, one of which is active and one of which is no longer in service.
