There might be room but experience has shown there is no appetite for it. There was MTR and before that Talk 1116. Even with some big names, neither caused even a blip on the radar against 3AW.

That’s where the “in theory” comes in…

Agree, a startup would be targeting a demographic that is the least likely to make a change to what they’re listening too.

I’ve noticed ARN has added iHeartDance and iHeartCountdown to the RadioApp.

It’s not on DAB in Sydney, has it been added to their lineup in Brisbane or Melbourne, or elsewhere ?

According to DABList, iHeartDance is available on DAB+ in Melbourne & Gold Coast, whilst iHeartCountdown is available on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast - level on Dance is very low.

Still, it’s a better use of spectrum to have their channels at 32 kbps EEP-3A, than EEP-1A IMO.

Holy crap, ARN are finally using 9A in Melbourne! iHeartDance/iHeartAustralia are both 32k on 9A.

I assume this is linked to those upgrades discussed regarding the station limit, but I’d have thought given how they paid for the space, they could have had access before stuff like Niche Radio 2 if there was a hard limit on station count.

ARN being on 9A in Melbourne is partially linked to the station limit upgrades, but mostly due to studio upgrades & the reason they haven’t been on 9A before is due to costs, if you have stations on multiple multiplexes everything has to be duplicated.
Even if they have 20,000 listeners to stations on one multiplex, just for studio DAB equipment is much more than $20k, $200k plus would be more like it, then you need links to the transmitter as well & on going operation costs, so you have to decide on, what point is best to sit on empty spectrum or spend money & use it, trying to recover costs.

Right back at the studio anything on 9A has to be processed, encoded/multiplexed, etc. on separate equipment to anything on 9B, & that’s duplicated all the way through until the antenna combiner, which is actually quadruplicate, as there’s redundancy on everything, so 2 of everything for 9A & 2 of everything for 9B.

ARN have recently done studio upgrades in Melbourne, & changed the DAB head end from the original Factum Radioscape gear to Paneda https://paneda.no/products/dab-head-end/, ABC/SBS run on Paneda gear & so does SEN & a couple of other minor networks/stations, everyone else still use Factum Radioscape stuff, including all the transmission multiplexers.

Appreciate this, @TV.Cynic , are there any stations on 9D not with EEP of 3A?

Do the three community licensees use the full 2/9 of their allocation or if not, is it unused or used by commercial licensees? (likely forbidden by legislation yet no problem to run commercial on a HPON in Echuca)

Apologies for the many questions.

In your opinion indeed. Try driving around the city and in building, be it residential or commercial and you’d appreciate EEP-1A very much.

Especially without the array being OD and 3dB up in lieu of a lack of translators. The terrain south of Burleigh Heads and north of Coomera limits coverage too; however, within the main eastern beam, EEP-1A has been very handy.

Just checked digital radio here in Melbourne and noticed a number of changes and new stations. Some of these may have already been posted here by others.

IHEART RADIO
iHeart has a number of new stations:

iHeartAustralia
iHeartCountry
iHeartDance
iHeartTrivia

Meanwhile, KIIS101.1 has disappeared, so there’s just KIIS 101.1 now.

LIGHT FM
Light Christmas is no longer silent, rebroadcasting Light89.9, though at a slight delay to the original Light89.9 also on DAB+, so it’s still a separate channel with its own bandwidth etc.

TRIPLE M
MMM 90’s has been replaced by MMM CLASSIC ROCK and has some hosted programs.

RSN
RSN’s other two channels have been renamed RSN Xtra 1 & RSN Xtra 2.

RSN Xtra 1 has the same audio as Sky Racing 1 (the TV channel) and may carry some programs from 2KY Sydney (a.k.a. Sky Radio) at times but not sure about this.

RSN Xtra 2 broadcasts other programs at times and rebroadcasts main program (RSN Racing&Sport) at other times.

I believe it was replaced by Tradie Radio.

Maybe you’re right, but whichever one replaced MMM 90’s, both MMM CLASSIC ROCK and MMM TRADIE RADIO are there.

They also carry the main RSN Radio&Sport program at various times, e.g. overnight.

Tradie radio replaced MMM 90 at the being of the year. It was posted in this thread. Scroll up.
