That could also be part of the reason, as well as a blocking move against the new ACE-controlled 2UE/4BH/Magic, which plays a lot of 80s.
ACE might counter back with their own 80s branded DAB+ station! That will make it 5 80s stations in Sydney!

Correct. MMM 90s and Oldskool 90s was launched to counter Nova 90s and Smooth 90s when it launched a year ago, and likewise Easy 80s was launched to counter Smooth 80s.
In fairness, MMM 90s and Oldskool 90s are better than their predecessors (MMM Greatest Hits and Oldskool).
It would be good to see a 70s branded station such as Smooth 70s or Gold 70s or 2UE 70s.
I kinda liked Oldskool it was like Zoo but actually on-air for more then 2 seconds.
LISTNR has a 70’s Hits Station, it’s on Their App.
In the UK even a hot AC station like Heart has a 70s station, albeit online not DAB
Absolute Radio 70s is on DAB in London.
True. Forgot about that one.
Yes but it’s only on DAB+ in Hobart. I’m talking about a national DAB+ 70s station.
I think the current Oldskool 90s log is the best it has ever been as it’s sounding more up-tempo and playing a lot of great R&B, Dance and Pop songs.
Yes, Zoo has a good log too but it’s been off air for the last few months.
I’m gonna Write to Anthony Albanese about an Push for ABC & SBS to Add More DRM Transmitter Sites for More Test Trials.
Has VHF Channel 9A been used in South Australia?
Yes.
DAB+ channels 9A, 9B, 9C and 9D occupy the same space as TV channel 9A, so part of TV Channel 9A is used in Adelaide for DAB+ in Adelaide.
There is also an ABC9A TV station in Wirrulla.
But I don’t think this Melbourne DAB+ will be called Mixx because ARN may still own the trademark “Mix” in regard to radio in Melbourne. But “Coast DAB+” would be a good name for a CHR/HotAC as Ace already has Coast FM in Warrnambool and they could position it as “The Peninsula’s Hit Music Station”. But it can’t get Kate Tim & Joel and Fitzy & Wippa due to them being on Nova. A CHR/HotAC for the Mornington Peninsula to complement 3MP.
What is the point in broadcasting Mixx in Melbourne? Is the playlist any different to what is already being done here by ARN?
Given that ACE has not taken over the DAB lease for 6GT, it would appear unlikely that they will have any additional DAB stations as part of their station lease from 9Radio.
I also had the impression that when ACE acquired 3MP they were effectively blocked from creating additional DAB stations because Pacific Star (SEN) had already on-leased the spectrum (beyond the 3MP simulcast) - or alternatively, the sale to ACE only included spectrum sufficient to simulcast 3MP.
In either case, not exactly a glowing endorsement by ACE as to the viability of DAB only stations, as presumably for a fee that could have leased the DAB spectrum. It’s not like NTS is setting the world on fire…
I didn’t know about that. Who did 3MP’s additional digital capacity get leased out to? I suppose Rete Italia/Niche Radio is one? That does not leave ACE with any other capacity for DAB-only stations on the 3MP space?
That’s a good point. Really they could call it anything and just use the same log/daytime and weekend announcers, with the same logo.
I would have thought by leasing Magic 1278, 2UE and 4BH they would be able to access 128kb of spectrum as that is what comes with the license?
It’s more similar to 2Day FM than KIIS 101.1.
But that’s beside the point. If they can get more advertisers and listeners then that would be a boon for them.
