Digital Radio - Content

I just find it strange to broadcast “Niche Radio” - have no website to list a schedule, no text to provide a program guide, etc.

DAB is quite good at handling part time channels, able to keep an identifier around even if a service isn’t on air, so it’d be far smarter to just run the channels as things like ‘Rete Italia’, and then just have some scrolling text mentioning on air times.

Probably should make wider use of ‘secondary component’ stations - the BBC use them well, with things like Sports Extra or their Parliament service, the ABC could do similar when they have sport overlaps or for Parliament

Can anybody tell me who owns MyCanberra & MyPerth? Streamed Perth durring the week and heard Rob Duckworth hosting it. Can seem to find any info or schedules

Capital Radio Network owns & operates those stations. They also own stations like 2CA, 6iX, 3GG, XLFM, 2GN, Snow FM & Eagle FM.

Thanks for that, Rob Duckworth was hosting Perth. Can’t find anything about him on websites or the like.

Kinderling Kids is set to move back to SCA’s DAB+ stable after it has been acquired by them. It had previously been part of SCA’s DAB+ stable when it first launched in 2015 before moving to ARN’s DAB+ stable in July 2018.

good timing - my oldest (who is 10 but has intellectual disabilities) was asking about it again the other night, and i had to explain again it was gone

Article doesn’t mention going back on DAB though, just joining their app. Unless they end up treating it like their other app stations and there’s a 32kbps stream of it in one SCA market - indeed just in time for Gold Coast DAB to launch so they can squeeze in another set of stations to reduce royalty costs…

Is ABC Kids Listen very different in content/style to what Kinderling had?

a little more varied in the music they play - ABC listen only really plays stuff from there properties - giggle and hoot, wiggles, play school, ec

ABC Kids Listen also has a story time and plays ambient dreaming music over night. Might cater for more younger ears.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Kinderling on Gold Coast DAB when it’s launched soon, for this exact reason.

MMM 80s has appeared on DAB+, at least in Sydney, replacing MMM Soft Rock.

This coincided with Urban Hits being rebranded as RnB Fridays.

Same in every other City

It’s a shame MMM Soft Rock no longer exists - it had a terrific playlist! I guess SCA had to remove it as it was taking listeners away from 2Day FM and Triple M perhaps?

If that’s actually the case then what’s the point of having extra stations on digital if they’ll be dumped if they get too popular?

Remember that’s what they did with Classic Rock a while back - axed it because they thought it was taking listeners away from the FM station. They put it back of course, after quite a backlash.

Not sure that’s the case this time though. I think they see the success of the ARN 80s stations and want a piece of that action.

I had a bit of listen to MMM 80s tonight.

Seemed to be mostly overseas acts - Survivor, Loverboy, Pat Benetar, Boys Don’t Cry… didn’t hear any Aussie acts. But it wasn’t all rock, they played Nik Kershaw too.

But the sound quality is ordinary at 32 kbps.

It’s crazy.

4IP - 4TAB Christmas is on air in Brisbane.

Love it, that’s my sign of Christmas in Brisbane when @4TAB-1008kHz flicks the switch on the 4IP tribute that we all enjoy.

Now, @4TAB-1008kHz, there’s more movement at the digital station this Christmas too as I notice the bit rates are currently:

4TAB (AM program simulcast): 40kbps
4IP - 4TAB XMAS: 48kbps

Then there’s 4TAB 3 with 16kbps and 4TAB 4 with 24kbps. Both running instrumental music when I checked.

Double of Tina Arena, complaining about men in her usual style, one about 16 years, why did she stay that long if she hated him all that time as the lyrics suggest?

Then WOW! AMAZING!

Entire length of ‘Heard it on the grapevine’ with what must be a contender for record length instrumental finish. Amazing to hear in its entirety, you’d never hear that on MMM digital. Would love to hear it on vinyl.

Once one network makes changes to its dab stations the others follow like sheep. They all do 80s and 90s now and your right, the soft rock mmm wasn’t bad! Same with sca and easy hits before it was changed to 80s.
