Digital Radio - Content

Yes, Iris had different content earlier on, but every time I check these days it’s the same content.

ARN are launching Woolworths Radio with bespoke playlists tailored for different stores.

Hopefully it will be better than CW Remix.

I can’t believe it took Woolworths this long.

And a shame SCA didn’t swoop in at all for this.

Wonder if there will be a generic version of Woolworths Radio on DAB like Coles Radio is?

Always one step behind the big C.

Christmas Hope is on air in Brisbane. unsure of the bit rate but suspect its rubbish given they have chopped the steam into 3 (from just Inspire digital to Inspire, 96.5 and Christmas Hope)

All three are running 48 kbits/s

SCA Dance Hits doing 11.00am Rememberance and minute’s silence at midday AEDST. Presumably as it’s 11.00am in QLD/EST. So they’ll be doing this again as other timezones hit 11.00am?

Probably

Which should mean at least 4 Rememberance Day observances.

Would make more sense if digital stations are run on local time instead of AEDST, it can’t be hard to do that?

Given it’s just music maybe it’s just one feed for everywhere instead of local time for each station.

I was listening to the station on the Melbourne page of https://www.digitalradioplus.com.au/listen.aspx?region=Melbourne

maybe online differs from broadcast?

They do vary for some stations at least.

WSFM80s has different ads on DAB vs the iHeart Radio 80s.

Many Years ago when The Edge Digital only rebroadcast The Edge 96.1 during the breakfast show, the Brisbane stream was delayed by an hour when Sydney/Melbourne were on daylight saving time. I assume that Adelaide & Perth were also delayed by the time difference.

Exciting developments in Melbourne - there is now a second station from Niche Radio, with one station at 24kbps and the other at 16kbps.

Niche Radio 2 seems kinda broken - it’s like there’s someone flipping between different source stations.

One of the stations I was able to ID was http://radiorhythm.com.au/ - which is apparently on 1656AM in Melbourne - though I don’t have any radios that go high enough to check.

Can’t understand why this is a thing, but oh well.

Who does Niche lease their spectrum from? Who owns Niche?

The domain name (as per this article from a decade ago: https://radioinfo.com.au/news/who-niche-radio/) still, today, has links to the Il Globo newspaper and related companies, and thus, Rete Italia - who sold most of their narrowcast stations to SEN (which became SEN Track).

They probably realised there was something (however little) to be made of hosting other extended-band ethnic services along with Rete Italia there. How that is actually going, I have no idea, as their web site doesn’t really say much (besides claiming the 1994 history of the original Rete Italia service) - maybe Niche Radio 2 is the start of offering something that isn’t “90%+ Rete Italia”. :man_shrugging:

I can’t remember whether SEN is hosting/leasing to the Niche Radio DAB+ services (in Sydney and Melbourne at least) as part of that deal, I’m sure someone would correct me on that. They would have had some unused space in Melbourne at least as 3MP wouldn’t have been using all its allocation.

Niche radio is leasing 32kbps spectrum off Sky Sports Radio in Sydney.

Aah, that’d explain why the Sky 2 channel disappeared (not that they were using it). Thanks for that.
