It’s December 1st mate, it’s open season now
You wouldn’t expect a commercial greatest hits station to play Christmas music. Christmas eve/day I’d accept somewhat but 3-4 weeks out?
Seriously, it’s 1st December now. Radio stations are beginning to play more Christmas music now because we’re nearing closer to Christmas Day and we’re officially in December now. You either want to get into the festive season or you don’t want to. Simple as that.
Agreed, @Petarkco if you don’t like Christmas music then simply just don’t listen to radio at all until Boxing Day - 26th December 2024.
I don’t remember WSFM or any similar stations playing Christmas music before?
I wonder how much of the audience actually wants to hear Christmas music.
A few years ago, I remember hearing Smooth Fm play Happy Xmas (War Is Over) around Nov 20 and thought that was a bit early. but Dec 1…I have no problems with it.
For the past few weeks, you only have to go into shops and centres to hear Christmas music blaring out of the speakers… I think radio does quite well holding off playing Christmas music until December.
I liked what I used to do at MMM Newcastle - if there was a Christmas tune, it would find itself moved to the end of the hour’s playlist and oh whooooooooops, had to drop it and a couple of other songs to time out to news
Grease - Summer Nights, on Triple J
Heard it too while I was trying to decipher whether I was hearing Triple J or an oldies station on the same frequency - their song choice was not helping!
What frequency?
96.1 thinking you were hoping for Zinc?
I actually thought that we were in Requestival when this song played but then I found out that they haven’t done that since 2022.
Paranoid about Whammageddon and Mariahageddon (or whatever that one’s called)
Just saw the WSFM log for today (8/12/2024) and at 3:20am this morning, they played “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls. An artist or group you rarely ever hear on the station.
I think Smooth play them a bit … I’m sure I’ve heard songs like ‘Stop’ here and there.
I heard that song on smoothfm around 2:00pm this afternoon. They also play “Say You’ll Be There” on the station quite frequently too.
That song is 28 years old. It’s like WSFM playing a song from 1970 in 1998… It might be a bit on the “pop” side but was a huge hit in their defence. Not something I personally like to hear though. I feel they have a few songs that would fit better in the playlist.
Aw c’mon, you have got to give. Taking is too easy but that’s the way it is.
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979… ABC Local Radio rocks my workplace
Probably not that odd, as many ABC Local Radio listeners would (nowadays) have grown up listening to the likes of the Smashing Pumpkins. Like me, and I’m on the wrong side of 50.
Also one of their softer hits and probably their best known hit. But had they played “Ava Adore” that would have been something!
Cruising around Beauie with my dial locked to 92.1 and heard Dylan ‘Blowing in the Wind’… which may not be all that extraordinary… but it was hot on the heels of Sabrina Carpenter Espresso. I’m not used to such jittery unjustified juxtaposition. ‘Did they really just play that back to back?’
Nothing wrong with it. Just not used to it.
Throughout 8:00 AM on Triple M Newcastle’s Mornings with Ryzy during Awesome 80s Friday, they played two songs from Crowded House, in order for listeners to win the final tickets to their concert at Newcastle Entertainment Centre. Unfortunately those two songs played throughout the hour were “Distant Sun” and “Four Seasons in One Day” from their albums Together Alone and Woodface released in 1993 and 1991 respectively!
At least it wasn’t the predictable Mean to Me/Now We’re Getting Somewhere combo
