Did They Really Just Play That?

Not sure if this belongs on this thread (probably on the Great Songs Heard on Radio) but earlier this week, I heard “Sweet Caroline” (BAH BAH BAAAAAAAH!) by Neil Diamond on Triple M GOAT Greatest Songs Countdown, both on Metro and Regionals. Also heard Alien Ant Farm’s cover of “Smooth Criminal” on there as well.

No disrespect to the late Michael Jackson intended but I’ll always prefer the Alien Ant Farm version of this song.

Became one of my favourite songs of late-2001 and wasn’t surprised that it hit number one on the ARIA Charts.

Personally I hate both of those songs. Station changers for me :grinning:

Now on the GOAT 600 songs countdown is Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” which is played on both Metro and Regionals! Normally when Triple M Sydney/Melbourne play Michael Jackson’s discography on their countdowns they would usually play the rock influenced “Beat It” which contains the guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen but since this is played on both regional and metros this is basically the seldom times they play MJ outside of “Beat It.”

The Metro Ms have also played “Thriller” in the past, i have heard that on Nights with Dave Gleeson.

Heard this song on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 chart show from 16th July 1988 charting in at #18 on 2NUR FM 103.7 Newcastle this afternoon. Pretty much a goofy guilty pleasure of mine during Will Smith’s rap career from the late eighties!

Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 on 96FM… little new and poppy for 96!

You’d have to wonder whether they’re moving to a Gold/WS playlist.

Listening online to the 20-20 Retro Coundown tonight at work via Mix Darwin, supposedly they were counting down songs from late July in 1980…and the first song that came over the stream (and played over the top of the VO) was 12th Man-Marvellous, which unless I’m very much mistaken is NOT a song from 1980. Indeed give the next song was Frente-Ordinary Angels, it was quickly discovered whilst the voiceover was announcing tracks and snippets from 1980, the stream was playing songs from 1992.

That’s weird, I wonder if the FM broadcast was like that too, and across all stations that take the Retro 20/20 Countdown?

I’m On My Way - The Proclaimers

Currently playing on Triple M “Nights With Dave Gleeson” during their Classic 9 At 9… theme is “On and Off songs”…. Whilst I quite like that song, seemed an odd fit for Triple M, even though they’ve mellowed into a “Greatest Hits” station.

Or this their ongoing flaw of removing heritage of regional stations, applying a Sydney rock station branding and now proverbially hammering a square peg into the round hole?

They’re in the process of doing the opposite, mellowing the music to Greatest Hits across the board (Perth the lone exception)

Paul Lekakis - Boom Boom (WION 1430 AM stereo…didn’t know this was a hit in the US!)

The Cruel Sea- The Honeymoon Is Over (ABCRN, in Roy & HG’s show). PS- Roy & HG aren’t that funny anymore, sadly.

Apparently, on Tanya and Steve on Triple M Newcastle this morning, they played “When You’re Gone” by Bryan Adams featuring Mel C during Triple M’s Awesome 80s Friday to promote Adams’ Australian tour next year…little did they know that this song was released in 1998, way too long after the 80s ended!

Yes odd choice!

Though I think the Awesome 80s only really starts from 9am and goes to 3pm?

6am-6pm now.

Being a tour announcement and a core 80s artist, I’m not surprised they’ve skirted around the edges here. Summer of 69 and Run To You already being flogged through workdays.

I know that Triple M regionals have been playing this song for months now and has been mentioned before but…yet another atrocity…

I absolutely detest that song, and always have. I’ll never understand its appeal.

just another step in killing the MMM brand.

the brand is so muddied now with the regionals playing songs like this
