Did They Really Just Play That?

A few months later Triple M regionals (via Triple M Newcastle 102.9) played two songs back to back with the word “Come” in the title between 7:49 and 7:53 PM tonight.

“Come to Me” by Diesel and “Come on Eileen” from Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

Five years ago though, definitely.

An interesting ‘Classic 9 At 9’ on ‘Nights With Dave Gleeson’ tonight.

One for the theme being 1985, tied in with the Netflix documentary on the USA For Africa song “We Are The World”.

7 of the 9 songs weren’t actually from 1985. And a few of them are not normally artists/songs you’d normally hear on the metro Triple Ms.

The list - for me, only the Huey Lewis song fits the bill on both counts

I dare say most of them. I’d expect that to be a Gold FM metro playlist, but not MMM by any means.

I think it would be ideal for the Triple M Metros to play “Beat it” since it’s one of the Rock inspired songs from MJ as Eddie Van Halen did the guitar solo for that song as well. Another Rock influenced MJ song that would be more ideal to the Triple M Metros is “Give in to Me” from his 1991 album “Dangerous” which featured Slash on guitar.

I don’t disagree, except i think.MJ is too closely associated with pop for the metro Ms to play him outside of a themed show/countdown.

I seem to recall FM104 played Beat It and Billie Jean in the 80s in their regular rotation but only very rarely. Definitely not like the Top 40 stations were playing them.

don’t forget Adl and Bri are Greatest Hits MMM stations, only Mel and Syd do rock these days. So it suits most of the format.

8 of the 9 songs were actually artists who appeared on “We Are The World”, followed by the song itself.

Yes, I think that was precisely why those artists were played.

91fm in Vietnam is currently playing:

Blessings by Hollow Coves.

I’ll leave there for others here to judge (since I checked and found that this is a Queensland-based independent band.)

Yesterday afternoon or so, Triple J played “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift as part of “F Off Friday” which is very ironic since they had disqualified her from the 2014 Hottest 100 following KFC’s promotion to vote her in.

A Beautiful Life - Ace of Base on 2NURFM Breakfast. “Easy Listening”

Maybe they just wanted to say “It’s a beautiful life here in Newcastle and across the Hunter, and Ace Of Base think so too…2NUR, good morning!”

Some of the music that comes up on their syndicated shows is really off format for them music wise.

For instance, I heard Love And Rocket’s “So Alive” (gothic sounding indie rock song) yesterday morning.

Isn’t 2NUR a bit like Coast FM and Great Lakes, ie a structured classic hits format during the daytime and more traditional ‘block style’ community radio programming after hours?

A lot of regional community stations are though. But still, normally they’d choose a show that is somewhat in keeping with their overall sound so that it’s not too jarring.

And i don’t think that Ace Of Base song is necessarily out of place either, it’s soft enough i think.

It played Connor Wink’s “Deeper and Deeper” over and over again.

Three months later, Triple M Newcastle 102.9 FM (and other MMM Regionals) did the same thing again at around 10:15 AM today, playing the same songs with the word “Don’t” in the title consecutively but swapped around this time!
