Many years ago, I happened to be listening to one of those short comedy segments that they used to run on commercial radio. The skit referred to the town of Yea- something along the lines of ‘where are you from…Yeaaaaa(hhh)’.
Guess where I happened to be at the time? I think it was on 3SUN Shepparton, 93.7.
A few years back I was in the car driving around suburban Melbourne with a girl from Wagga Wagga when Dont call Wagga Wagga Wagga by Greg Champion came on Saturday Night Country. Another time, driving to Wangaratta, Captain Matchbox were in the studio with Richard Stubs - yep they finished the interview with Wangaratta Wahine.
Back in March 2010, I was travelling along the main street of Port Kembla & “Working Class Man” by Jimmy Barnes was played on Wave FM (back when it was an adult hits with a CHR slant station) at that very moment, which I thought was quite appropriate for where I was.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston was played on Mix 106.3 recently. Good song, but the twist was that it turned out to be one of Kristen’s favourite songs, so when it started playing she starting telling them to turn it up and that she loves it.
And just now: Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners played on Mix 106.3. It’s a song regularly flogged by Triple M stations, so no exceptions for it to play this very moment.
Uptown Girl by Billy Joel is also getting this treatment.
…and they count towards a commercial radio station’s Australian music quota.
Still an odd choice though, especially for a station where reaching a quota of Australian music content isn’t an issue and for a Triple M branded station!
I know some of what is played on the MMM regional network is out of place with the legacy of the brand, but at 10:51 AM this morning MMM Central Queensland decided it was a good time to play New Kids on the Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff).
I’ve even heard this song on Hit the other week. Are the regional Triple M and Hit trying to compete with each other? The Triple M regionals are a joke.
I think it’s sounding better than it did say 6 months ago, there doesn’t seem to be as much newer stuff as there was. But then it’s kinda faint praise, it’s still not great, just okay.
I think you might referring to what you’re hearing on 2GO, in which its weekday playlist is what you’ve described there, whereas Triple M Newcastle & most other regionals play more newer stuff.
I can’t say I have listen to Triple M much over the last 6 months. Every time I flick over to Triple M they are either playing that Day Drunk by Morgan Evens or Dancing in The Moon Light by Toploader or that annoying new song by Shawn Mendes.
