Not sure if this really fits here, but New FM played a version of Harvey Danger’s ‘Flagpole Sitta’ that censored the words ‘God damn you’. Obviously a US radio edit with that level of censorship. I know it’s Easter but that’s ridiculous.
I have heard the Uncensored version a lot of times on Triple M though.
Yes, I’ve only ever heard the uncensored version. It was a 9inety6ix.1 classic BITD.
That’s interesting.. were there alternate lyrics or just one or more words blanked out?
Song was the usual version, just with the ‘God damn’ bleeped out.
Heard the English 99 Red Balloons on Bay FM - a unnecessary version “lost in translation”.
Heard a couple of rarely played songs on Triple M Newcastle today with the recent inductees of this year’s Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. At a quarter past ten I heard “Best things in life are free” by Luther Vandross (featuring Janet Jackson of all artists, a song that’s more of a HIT Network song) and at a quarter to twelve, “Two Hearts” by Phil Collins.
Surely that’s the first time I’ve heard this song on the MMM Network since the regionals play more of Collins’ discography next to his cover of “You Can’t Hurry Love.”
Also staying on Triple M Newcastle (and metro) via Lu and Jarch’s “Best of” at a quarter to 3PM, i apparently heard the unedited album version of Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life” which had the “Crystal Meth” and “Little Red Panties” lyrics uncensored. I was kind of shocked to hear MMM play the album version nationwide as they usually play the edited radio version for a couple of years now.
That’s another example of excessive censorship; those lines were always uncensored back when it was released in 1997.
I think the ‘little red panties’ line only appears in the album edit though; most stations played the radio edit in which that whole stanza is cut (starting with ‘And when the plane came in…’)
Not another post-9/11 cut was it?
No; they used to edit it for brevity at the time (1997). They definitely wouldn’t have played it during 9/11 of course.
You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon
Heard on Triple J this morning (via 92.9 Southern WA).
Perhaps it shouldn’t be that surprising anymore.
How appropriate. That should be Albany, WA’s theme song as a lot of people mistakenly pronounce it as ‘All-bany’…myself included when I first visited WA. It took a TV commercial to correct that.
Off topic, I did know about their pronunciation, but found out whilst here that the home of 6WA is pronounced “Way-jin” not “Wog-inn” as I had it in my head.
I’ve always said ‘Wage-in’, but I did wonder if it might be ‘Wag-in’ (as in wag the dog).
