“Forever Young” was originally performed by German synthpop group Alphaville in 1984.
Yes, that cover is definitely from the mid 2000s.
There was yet another cover by a techno group called Interactive back in the mid 90s.
Tutti Frutti - Little Richard (1955)
Just played on Coles Radio DAB.
A song that’s older than nearly all of its customers, and even most staff ![]()
And they followed that up with a 2013 John Newman song (Love Me Again).
Never heard them play a song that old before.
Big Audio Dynamite- The Globe
Power 98.1 Muswellbrook this morning (via tropo).
Not the full extended mix with the Bart Simpson voice but still, surprising that this got an airing on an otherwise fairly safe network.
(Also belongs in the ‘Great songs…’ thread, natch).
Triple J taking requests during late drive/early evenings today (and I presume other days) meant I got to, for the first time I’ve known, hear Pet Shop Boys “West End Girls” on said station in my lifetime. I believe there might have been some Proclaimers earlier on too, but I heard bits of it and switched off immediately, so cannot confirm.
Was it because you were “I’m On My Way” (back home) and probably “I’m Gonna Be 500 Miles” closer to home by tonight?
Can confirm that I heard I’m On My Way - Proclaimers on Triple J on that show at about 6:30. Was going to post in this thread but forgot. I actually thought the radio was tuned to Triple M Regional!
They were also doing it another day (may have been last Saturday?) where I heard Don’t Look Back In Anger - Oasis.
I assume this show is only for summer but I probably would listen if it was regular! Sort of a smaller scale Requestival.
Yes, in my tuning around the band for DX I’ve stumbled across JJJ playing some older/out of format stuff over the last couple of weeks. Kylie has been heard on more than one occasion.
That’s brilliant!
On 2GB overnight they played Last Kiss by Pearl Jam as the tragic song.
One of the cover versions that i cannot stand in my opinion all thanks to its repetitive airplay on the MMMs.
I’m reminded of Billy Connolly belting out “Tell Laura I Love Her” whenever I hear that particular teenage tragedy!
“Last Kiss” made #299 in Triple M’s Most Played Countdown.
TURD then and a TURD now, blech!
Tonight Gold 104 played Avicii’s “Wake Me Up.” I was surprised to hear it but figured enough time has passed now that it has entered the canon of what qualifies as a “Great Song” in their terms.
However it was an apparently custom edit that removed the beat drop sections, like this:
I found this a bit blasphemous to be honest. Avicii’s great innovation was to merge EDM with traditional acoustic songwriting. He wanted to bring the KIIS and Gold audiences together basically. To strip out his innovation in order to make the song more palatable feels really disrespectful and is butchering it. It made me a bit sad especially since he is gone.
Heard GOLD just play S Club 7’s “Don’t Stop Movin”, think it’s the first time hearing a S Club 7 song on the GOLD network.
I did hear Nova 96.9 Sydney play Midnight Oil’s “Beds Are Burning” tonight.
Most likely in relation to Rob Hirsts passing. But thought they’d be more likely to play “Blue Sky Mine” - being a 90s song, which they some of.
Could go one better of course and play “Truganini”, one of my fav Oil’s songs, one that hasn’t been heard on commercial radio in years.
Might dig that out for Rock In Stereo next week. I agree- one of their best efforts and doesn’t get any airplay.
2NUR just aired a very odd sounding version of PhD’s “I Won’t Let You Down”.
I managed to trace it to a 2012 re-recording album called “Love On Pop” by Choco Records, and I honestly don’t even think it’s Jim Diamond singing it.
Love On Pop (Unforgettable Songs) - Spotify
But they made up for it afterwards by playing Sharon O’Neill’s “Physical Favours” - the original version, of course!
