26 were definitely not necessary, on 7s version iirc 25 of them only appeared for a few seconds at the start of the episode, where few people would have tuned in yet.
One or two models should be kept to present the cheque and pass the briefcases around, that’s a quintessential part of the show.
Who cannot see this show survive until the end of 2024 competing against Seven and Nine News? They should’ve aired it at 5:00pm. It doesn’t matter if they move 10 News First to 5:30pm as it’s the lowest rating news bulletin out of the 3 commercial networks.
10 are just fucked up then. Deal Or No Deal would get more viewers if it aired at 5:00pm. Game shows at 6:00pm have never been a ratings winner for 10 competing against Seven and Nine News.
The problem I have with this is the fact they’ve tried Feud, Pointless, Celebrity Name Game and maybe even something else in that slot and none of it worked. It seems like a waste of money. Points for trying something new but given the 30mins of extra news didn’t cost much I’m not sure this show will have the effect they would want.
then it would’ve gone up against Tipping Point and The Chase which meant DOND might have not been successful at 5pm. 6pm allows for a point of difference.
About 75% of people including me would watch Seven or Nine News. If Deal Or No Deal aired at 5:00pm I would still watch The Chase, but would watch it on 10 Play after 7:30pm.
You really need to stop suggesting that now. We get it. There’s no evidence it would’ve. And if you know anything of the history of 10 since 1992, they won’t be moving the news at 5.
They should have a 30min news bulletin at 5 (if they want to keep their “signature” timeslot), put DOND (or whatever gameshow) at 5.30, and then do News at 6, Project at 7.
They need to reestablish themselves as a credible player in news. Significant investment in reporters and local bulletins. If they’re not willing to do this, forget winning or even being competitive from 6-7 and just air reruns of …well, anything, because no one is watching.
Eventually they could phase out the 5pm bulletin.
If 10 were to move their news away from 5pm, Nine would switch their 4pm news to 5pm without hesitation in the eastern states to match Adelaide and Perth.
Fundamentally having something starting at 6pm when people are switching on for news in droves is the problem, and a failed strategy which hasn’t worked for them to date.
IMO they should reduce the 5pm bulletin to 30 mins (another 30 min local bulletin at say 7pm would be ideal) and have alternative programming in that hour timeslot from 5:30 which catches people before the news starts and then hopefully retains then to avoid them switching over.
They’re relying on the nostalgia of a past game show to be the real draw card here and to bring in new viewers, since the timeslot nor the host choice have proven to be drawcards in their own right.
EDIT:
Just saw this after I posted, and per the above I agree with the idea to reduce the 5pm bulletin and start the next programming (whether it’s DOND or something else) would have been a better strategy.
Get the rights back to the Simpsons and put them on at 6pm?
I do think you’ve got the right idea though, I’d put News at 5, DoND/another game show at 5:30, only difference being I’d put The Project at 6 and a one-hour bulletin at 6:30 (I feel like there’s not a lot of overlap between the type of viewer that would enjoy The Project and the type of viewer that enjoys Seven & Nine’s 6pm news).
One idea I wouldn’t mind seeing is having two game shows in rotation across the week, say DoND from Sunday to Tuesday and something like Wheel of Fortune from Wednesday to Friday. Would help prevent both programs suffering from viewer fatigue such as that which afflicted the original DoND and Hot Seat.
Re the discussion on models - could/should we see women and men models?
There is something inherently sexist about only women models - something that did fly in 2003, but would not and should not in 2023 (and especially for 10, which I feel is the most socially conscious of the big 3 networks).
But, featuring both men and women as the models (holding the cases, giving the cheque), would maintain that aspect of the show (and the a bigger event feel that the program had with the models) while not having a sexist bent that may be off putting in 2023z
Anyone else have the Board game, pocket electronic game toy or console game (such as Nintendo DS)? I had all three and got great use out of them all, that’s how much I used to like the show (this is going back 15-20 years though) Endemol-Southern Star and Seven (where AOK, its set, network logo and network name were prominently featured) must’ve got quite some cash out of the licenced merchandise! They were out for years too. Would Banijay (Endemol-Shine) / 10 bother releasing anything similar via a games publisher today?
