Dancing with the Stars

When was it filmed? Midweek? Weekends? I assume at night?

Daryl and the judges talking about “last week’s Semi Final”, despite it airing last night. Oops.

Had a random conversation today about DWTS at work. A couple of colleagues commented that they are really loving this season. 7 have certainly breathed life and interest back into the show.

This season was filmed in both midweek and weekends.
Episode 1: Saturday evening (May 20)
Episode 2: Sunday evening (May 21)
Episode 3: Wednesday evening (May 24)
Episode 4: Friday evening (May 26)
Semi final 1: Sunday evening (May 28)
Semi final 2: Monday evening (May 29)
Grand final: Thursday evening (June 1)

If Seven’s going to persist with splitting the pairs into two groups into the future, they could really air two episodes a week at Sunday and Monday every week for about 5-6 weeks and then have one Grand Final instead of rushing and eliminating about 3 pairs in one episode and having 5 runner ups.

And please have it LIVE again in the future. It doesn’t make a difference when you still end up with a 2 hour episode in a pre-record.

EDIT: It seems Seven are struggling to get an audience in because I remember on the same set in the Channel 10 seasons, the upstairs sections were all full of people whereas Seven appear to be unable to even fill the entire ground floor with people.

Meet the Grand Finalists

Christie, Virginia and Phil join the battle for the Mirror Ball Trophy

In tonight’s Dancing With The Stars, the second group of stars took on the semi-finals, with Phil Burton, Virginia Gay and Christie Whelan Browne making their way through to the Grand Finale; while Pia Miranda, Sally Pearson and Laura Byrne took their last spin on the dance floor.

Virginia Gay stole the show with a perfect-scoring Foxtrot, which judge Sharna Burgess described as “damn sexy".

Hot on her heels was Human Nature singer Phil Burton, who wowed the judges with his own enchanting Foxtrot. Scoring 39 points, judge Todd McKenney commented that their routine was so good he wanted to learn it.

Laura Byrne’s nerves got the better of her as she blanked part of her Cha Cha routine, while Sally Pearson overcame a few mistakes in her ferocious Tango.

Christie Whelan Browne’s unique take on the Samba had the judges in awe, however Todd believed that further connection with her partner Craig would have earned her a perfect score.

Sharna stepped out from behind the desk and on to the floor, along with the female professional dancers, to perform a sizzling routine.

Pia Miranda’s Paso Doble transported us to Transylvania, with the spin on Dracula sucking in Mark Wilson, who said it was “her best routine she’s done so far”.

After the audience vote, Virginia and Phil were the first couples through to the Grand Finale, while Sally Pearson was eliminated.

Pia, Laura and Christie all competed in the dance off, where the judges all agreed that Christie must go through to the Grand Finale.

The final leaderboard for the night:

  • Virginia Gay and Ian Waite – 40
  • Phil Burton and Ash-Leigh Hunter – 39
  • Christie Whelan Browne and Craig Monley – 37
  • Pia Miranda and Declan Taylor – 33
  • Sally Pearson and Mitch Kirkby – 31
  • Laura Byrne and Danil Saveliev – 19

Sunday night, it’s finally here! The Dancing With The Stars Grand

I know Christie Whelan Browne had injured her ankle/foot, but she almost seemed a bit pissed off last night. Even when she scored multiple 10s she didn’t seem happy, and I thought she may have been about to pull out of the comp because of her injury.

I read that as being a reaction to Todd’s feedback. He didn’t get the story she was trying to convey in the dance.

I get that vibe from her generally.

Yeah I think after a flurry of praises from Craig, Sharna and Mark Todd’s feedback just seemed to have knocked the optimism out of her.

The scores seemed to reflect that too. 10s from everyone (including Craig) but 7 from Todd.

I’m gunning for her to win but it’ll probably be Virginia Gay or Emily Weir.

And that’s done for another season.

I am happy with the winner. Much deserved.

Boyband ballroom blitz

Human Nature singer Phil Burton wins Dancing With The Stars

Tonight’s Dancing With The Stars Grand Finale was full of tears and triumph as Human Nature singer Phil Burton beat out Home and Away actor Emily Weir to take home the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.

The six grand finalists: Christie Whelan Browne, Mary Coustas, Paulini, Virginia Gay, Emily Weir and Phil danced their hearts out with their own freestyle dance in the ultimate ballroom showdown.

Phil topped the leaderboard with 39 points for his Motown moves to Wilson Pickett’s Land of 1000 Dances, while Emily received the same score for her Spice Girls inspired Salsa.

After combing the judges scores with the audience vote, Christie, Mary, Paulini and Virginia said goodbye; leaving Phil to be awarded the winning title and $20,000 for his chosen charity, NSW Police Legacy.

Phil said: “This show has just been so incredible for the last seven weeks. I’ve had the absolute time of my life. And, you know, it is a competition but it doesn’t feel like it when you are out here and you are with all these amazing people. It’s been an absolute joy to be a part of it.”

“I also want to thank my family who were here tonight, my beautiful wife and my kids. But the biggest thanks for me has to go to Ash. She’s brought out a side in me that I never even knew existed,” he continued.

The final leaderboard for the night:

Phil Burton and Ash-Leigh Hunter – 39

Emily Weir and Lyu Masuda – 39

Virginia Gay and Ian Waite – 36

Christie Whelan Browne and Craig Monley – 36

Mary Coustas and Aric Yegudkin – 31

Paulini and Igor Ifliand – 30

Out of the two finalists in the running, I agree that the right person has won. Not only a much higher profile, but also greatly improved and was just great to watch.

Phil Burton won Dancing With The Stars! so proud

If that is the case with the audience, rather than a production decision, suspect it’s mainly down to being pre-recorded. Far easier to get an audience in for a live show people are invested in.

I saw dances by Emily and Paulini on TV last night before switching to Hunted at 7.30pm. I thought Emily and her partner Ryu had the trophy in the bag when they received 39 points from the judges. I didn’t expect Phil and his partner Ash-Leigh also got 39 points and went on to win based on studio audience votes.

I really enjoyed this season. As much as I liked Virginia Gay and Mary Coustas I think the best two dancers made it to the end. I didn’t mind whether Phil or Emily won because they both deserved it.

Good to see there is still a decent pool of talent available for a show like this.

I enjoyed this season too, I think it’s mostly because many people knew some/most of the cast, which can’t be said for old seasons and other shows involving ‘celebrities’

Australia dances with the stars

Dancing With The Stars 2023 reaches 6.14 million viewers

After six weeks of shimmying and shaking, waltzing and cha-chaing, the 2023 season of the Seven Network’s hit series Dancing With The Stars wrapped last night, having reached 6.14 million Australians across Channel 7 and 7plus during its run.

The sparkling Grand Finale, which saw Human Nature star Phil Burton take home the iconic Mirror Ball trophy, captured 1.07 million broadcast and digital viewers. On broadcast alone, the Grand Finale was up 21% nationally on last year, including a 24% jump in the capital cities.

The big finish capped a strong season for Dancing With The Stars, which also had a national total TV audience across its run of 1.07 million.

The broadcast average was up 12% on 2022. On 7plus, the series’ audience leapt 19% in 18 to 39s versus last year.

Hosted by Daryl Somers and Sonia Kruger, the series was the most-watched entertainment program every Sunday night it went to air and ranked #1 in its timeslot in the capital cities in total people, grocery buyers and women 40-plus.

Seven Network’s Chief Content Officer, Entertainment Programming, Angus Ross, said: “Once again, Australia fell in love with Dancing With The Stars. In an increasingly cluttered content world, the feel-good show for the whole family stood out and grew its audience year-on-year.

“Congratulations to Daryl and Sonia, our judges and our 14 talented celebrities who left it all on the dance floor.”

Seven West Media Chief Revenue Officer, Kurt Burnette, said: “Seven reaches over 17 million people every month, with over 6.14 million of those people loving to watch and engage with celebrities on the dance floor – proving once again that Dancing With The Stars successfully captures the hearts of Australians, across the screens of Seven, in a positive, brand safe environment for advertisers.”
