ABC Radio will have live commentary for Australia’s Test tour of the West Indies, according to a promo aired just the midday news on ABC Radio Melbourne.
Probably similar to their Sri Lanka tour coverage, off screen in a studio given there’s no radio broadcasts from the Caribbean to link to (unlike 1999 when they took the old Cricket Plus feed)
The ABC has revealed details of its radio coverage of the World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa. Coverage on analogue radio varies each night. It can also be heard in full on ABC Listen app and digital radio.
Commentary will be from BBC Radio’s Test Match Special team.

The ABC has also revealed details of its coverage of West Indies v Australia test series. The opening test at Barbados will be called by Corbin Middlemas and Ben Cameron, with Dirk Nannes and Adam Crosthwaite providing special comments. Coverage begins at 11.45pm AEST on digital radio and the cricket button on the ABC Listen app.
Is the ABC team commentating on site in Barbados or is it a remote job?
I see from the press release above that SEN are on site.
I think the ABC team is calling remotely from Melbourne. All except Adam Crosthwaite are based in Melbourne.
Remote broadcast or not, it’s fantastic to see not one but two radio calls for this series. Not so long ago, nobody was interested in covering overseas test cricket on the radio, save for England and India tours. That’s why we had upstarts like Guerilla Cricket/Test Match Sofa and Jarrod Kimber…possibly they showed up the ABC and forced them to get their act together.
Would be great if we could get Test Match Special without the use of a VPN. Guerilla Cricket is still going and accessible worldwide- and is a bit less silly these days, thankfully.
About a decade ago it was looking unthinkable that there would be any coverage of a series in the West Indies, let alone having two calls to choose from.
I think the turning point was actually the sandpaper-gate series, SEN teaming up with Jarrod (if I recall correctly) was a great development after the ABC had seemingly abandoned the non England/India overseas tours.
Good to see that the ABC have since upped their game and are now covering these series as well.
I’m just about old enough to remember the days when the Windies tours were on ABC local radio overnight, last time was 2003 if my memory serves me right?
It would be great for the ABC to pick this up for DAB+ and the ABC Listen app, especially since they already leverage their BBC partnership for ICC tournaments (and in other sports such as the tennis with Wimbledon).
Not only that but i am pleased that there is a choice even for home series and the ABC no longer has a monopoly on it.
It’s really good to radio covering it with a pocket radio with ear buds plugged in (around 530am) . TV coverage is nice but having radio coverage is great for night tests. It’s a shame they don’t have the cricket on SEN dab in Sydney and you need the app to listen. I just listen to the ABC instead and wake up to it. I’d rather not fiddle with an app just press a button on my dab radio and you are in.
Yeah I found it a bit silly too.
According to ABC Help page, ABC Radio’s coverage of the second test between West Indies and Australia (at Grenada from July 3 to 7) will be called from Sydney, with Brett Sprigg and Robin Chipperfield as commentators, and Phil Jaques and Chris Tremain providing expert comments. Coverage starts at 11.40pm AEST (11.30pm AEST on Friday).
The third and final test between West Indies and Australia will have commentary by Corbin Middlemas, Ben Cameron, Adam Crosthwaite and Carl Hooper on all five days of action.
ABC Radio’s coverage begins at 4.15am AEST each day, from Sunday (July 13).
No radio coverage of the T20 series?
There will be no coverage of the West Indies v Australia T20 series on either ABC or SEN.
SEN’s broadcast schedule for tomorrow (July 21) was posted this morning, and there is no mention of the cricket anywhere. Game 1 is tomorrow at 10am AEST at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.
ABC Radio will have full commentary of Australia v South Africa white ball series during August. The coverage will be available on ABC Listen app, online and DAB, as well as Local Radio in NT or Cairns for selected matches.
The first T20 takes place in Darwin on Sunday night, August 10.
I wish they had some test matches as well.
The schedule and commentary team for ABC Radio’s coverage of Australia v South Africa white ball series has been updated. Matt Clinch will call the first ODI in Cairns while Quentin Hull will commentate the second and third ODIs in Mackay. Jason Gillespie and Stuart Clark will be experts for all three ODIs.
Veteran South African journalist Neil Manthorp will also call all three ODIs and (presumably) the three T20 matches.
It appears SEN is broadcasting the South Africa V Australia T20 series. Coverage is in the guide tomorrow from 7pm-11pm AEST.
Full coverage on SEN Fanatic. AFL markets are joining at 8pm. The strangest one is SEN Sydney which leaves at 9pm for Spirit Of Sport, so SEN Track Sydney is carrying the full coverage 7pm-11pm. It and Top End are the only Track stations airing the cricket (the latter also airing in full on the main SEN AM station)
In the same article, Phil wrote that SEN had also signed up Stuart Broad and Mike Atherton for its Ashes coverage this summer.
