So none of the commentary teams were in Brisbane?
ABC had Quentin Hull, Mitch Johnson, Kirsten Beams and Rick Findlay at the Gabba, rest of them were in Sydney.
SEN and the ABC had commentators in Brisbane. Fox had one team there too, and Seven had a few expert comms there as well.
Who from SEN was there? I noticed CA pointed people towards the ABC stream so assumed they were the only radio people at the ground.
Not sure but that’s what I’ve heard. I saw a tweet from them saying they were still going as they had someone at the ground (albeit apparently making his test commentary debut, so I assume he was a producer or ground correspondent).
Yeah I think most of SEN’s team were based in Melbourne but they had Bharat Sundaresan and Ian Healy locally who kept the call going during the outage. As above ABC had Quentin Hull with Mitchell Johnson and Kristen Beams as special comments, the latter two rotating while Quentin held the fort.
Hopefully this is a small lesson for broadcasters about the value of having commentators at the ground, and that they don’t try to continue saving a few bucks by having games called off the TV once Covid border restrictions lift.
I’m hoping all stations have commentators in Adelaide for the next test. Although the SA government does seem a bit alarmist over the new omicron strain so who knows.
Everyone had been saying they will all be in person in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. Who knows about Hobart now though.
ABC listen hits The Ashes for six
The Ashes cricket series between Australia and England has delivered record results for ABC listen, straight driving the app above half a million users for the first time.
The ABC’s coverage of Australia’s win in the First Test from 8-11 December attracted 2.7 million live streams across all ABC Radio services – up more than 17 per cent on the previous week.
ABC Sport was also in fine touch by generating 484,000 livestreams – an increase of some 1700 per cent on the previous week’s score of 26,000. Livestreams of ABC Sport’s coverage peaked at 140,000 on the first day of The Ashes, when Australia scuttled England for 147.
In total, 501,000 users tuned into the ABC listen app across the four days of play, to follow Australia’s win.
Listeners will get even more of what they love on ABC listen when the second Ashes Test begins tomorrow. The ABC will broadcast every match and every ball of the men’s and women’s Ashes this summer, live on ABC Radio, ABC Sport DAB+, ABC listen and via abc.net.au/sport.
Sports fans will also enjoy The Grandstand Cricket Podcast, with Corbin Middlemas and Ed Cowan reliving the highs and lows of the matches.
This summer, the ABC is also looking back on the history of the series with The Ashes Greatest Moments , which relives some of the biggest moments from cricket’s greatest rivalry.
Each of the 30-minute episodes includes original commentary from iconic Test matches and interviews with players and experts of the day and today. The first three episodes are available on the ABC listen app: Headingly 1981, Old Trafford 1993 and Edgbaston 2005. Additional episodes will be released throughout The Ashes series.
I wonder SEN/Triple M went. I am sure they would not have done half as well.
Appears as though ABC will be studio calling again today. Apparently a member of the BBC team (by process of elimination we believe it’s Henry Moeran) tested positive, meaning all members of the BBC and ABC teams (given they share commentary resources) would need to isolate.
Alison Mitchell would have been affected but she called the action for Seven in the first two sessions this afternoon.
The positive result was found during the daily COVID testing of the travelling media at Royal Adelaide Hospital this morning.
Andrew Moore phoned from his Adelaide hotel room to Ben Cameron in ABC Perth for an update. Andrew said that himself and members of the ABC commentary team are OK. He didn’t know when they would be cleared by SA Health and Cricket Australia and allowed to enter the ground.
EDIT 1: commentary from ESPN Cricinfo website
The media centre in the Riverbank stand at the ground was given a deep clean on Sunday while media who had not yet arrived were briefly held elsewhere while the situation was assessed before being allowed in. There has been no impact on the match.
EDIT 2: Clint Wheeldon and former England cricketer Nicky Shaw calling the first session from ABC Perth studio. Other commentators include Ben Cameron, Mitchell Johnson and former Australian captain Kim Hughes.
Well I guess those based in Perth will get to call test cricket after all!
Its whoever interviewed Dawid Malan last night
Thankful for the ABC continuing the coverage, but it appears there’s a decent delay between the call and the pictures/audio coming through in their studio.
It looks like the Perth team will commentate all of today’s play. Alison Mitchell is the only member of ABC and BBC commentary team at Adelaide Oval today, but she’s calling the action for Seven.
SEN 1170 is running the spirit of sport tonight. So whilst the NRL Grand Final could bump the show to 11pm, the Ashes cannot. Its not on 1539 either (the Ashes that is). Its interesting the contract of 1170 is pretty strict with the church. I am sure it wasn’t cheap the Ashes rights but still church perhaps pays more?
Why not put it on at 12pm Sunday then a replay at 11pm. 2ch can also put it on at 9pm. It seems the show is pre-recorded.
ABC Radio is calling the fifth and final day of the 2nd Ashes test from Perth, but has regained the service of Dirk Nannes. Alison Mitchell is calling the action at Adelaide Oval for Seven.
News Corp reported that the rest of the ABC/BBC commentary team flew from Adelaide to Sydney on Sunday night.
I’m assuming everyone will be on deck for Melbourne given their different rules for close contacts?
