Maxwell might simply go from Adelaide to Melbourne. It would mean he’ll miss Christmas with his family but there’ll be a lot of people making that sacrifice this year
News Corp reported tonight that Maxwell would call the Boxing Day test remotely for ABC Radio. I assume he will do it from the ABC HQ in Sydney while the rest of the team is at the MCG.
It’s been confirmed that Jim Maxwell will miss the Boxing Day test altogether.
ABC’s commentary team for the test match is:
I enjoy listening to Alison Mitchell calling cricket matches, she’s a great addition to the commentry team and its also great to hear a female commentating .
She’s been there for a few years now.
So with all the border business and talks of getting media in some sort of bubble, how will both networks cover Sydney now that it is likely to go ahead as planned?
If the likes of Jim Maxwell, Andrew Moore and Brett Sprigg want to call the third test at the SCG, they will have to agree to join the bubble, otherwise they will have to do it off the tube at ABC HQ at Ultimo. Ian Chappell lives on the Northern Beaches so he may need an exemption (if radio commentary is considered as work). Alison Mitchell and Sunil Gavaskar can commentate at the ground with no problems.
UPDATE 2/1: Andrew Moore had a long discussion with News Corp cricket writer Ben Horne about player quarantine and broadcast arrangements for the SCG test on ABC Grandstand today. Moore confirmed that Alison Mitchell and Sunil Gavaskar will commentate the match from Melbourne as they are part of Seven’s team as well. Jim Maxwell and Ian Chappell will call the match at the ground for ABC Radio, but won’t be able to travel to Brisbane for the final test.
I just tuned into Magic Talk radio over in NZ. The sound quality is great in full stereo. In my view the sound is better than ABC and then a lot better than SEN.
ABC commentary team for the third test between Australia and India. Robin Chipperfield will commentate his first test match for the public broadcaster.
ABC Local Radio in Victoria is still taking the government’s daily COVID briefing during the cricket, with coverage uninterrupted on ABC Sport digital radio and ABC Listen app.
SEN commentary team for the match
UPDATE 9/1: with the end of lockdown at Sydney’s Northern Beaches at midnight, Ian Chappell will return to ABC commentary at the SCG tomorrow for the fourth day’s play at the test.
ABC commentary team for the fourth and final test between Australia and India.
Mitchell and Gavaskar are stuck in Melbourne with fellow Seven commentators. Hopefully Gavaskar will be in Brisbane before the end of the test match, in order to present the trophy named after him and Allan Border to the winning team captain.
SEN commentary team for the test
Whateley, Hudson, Rogers & Damian Fleming are calling from Melbourne while Collins, Harris & Ian Healy are at the Gabba. Additionally, Matt White & Brad Haddin will be involved from Sydney
No, we are in Australia, so it is Allan Border’s job.
Correction to my post this morning regarding ABC’s coverage for the Gabba test. Turns out it has to split the commentary team like Fox and Seven due to border closures, so Andrew Moore, Jim Maxwell, Stuart Clark and Ian Chappell are calling off tube at NEP at Eveleigh in inner Sydney, while the rest of the team is at the ground, and stats man Ric Finlay is in Hobart.
Thought something was up when Chappeli started waffling on about coming into the studio.
They are actually at NEP in Eveleigh.
That’s more convenient as NEP provides raw pictures to Seven and Fox Cricket.

1539 SEN track has the big bash on tonight on Sydney. Whilst the spirit of sport is on SEN 1170.
A bit random, if you are interested, if you wish to tune into radio coverage for the tour over in Pakistan. South Africa is playing Pakistan. I tried to tune into 106.2 FM. It is mostly a music station but will only provide ball by ball commentary for the T20s not for the test matches unfortunately (only updates). Pakistan has done well so far.
Weird. What location are you?
