Cricket on Radio

Alison Mitchell (which flew into Sydney from England this week and is currently in hotel quarantine) will again be part ABC Radio’s cricket coverage this summer, but not Harsha Bhogle as he is stuck in India.

Today’s First ODI between Australia and India will only be on ABC Radio. Last summer (2019-20) Macquarie Sports Radio covered the ODI series too.

I don’t think SEN have ever covered ODIs at all. Only tests in recent summers.

Wonder what will happen on Sunday on 1170 AM ? The Spirit of Sport may be a bit late because of the cricket on 1170. I assume cricket will have the priority or that is the contract with NSW Council of Churches? (A bit like the AFL on Triple M Sydney over the NRL in past years) They can still run the show on DAB and then join it later on 1170 AM?

Edit: It seems like SEN are not doing today’s match. I was mistaken.

That’s the only international format they’ve had the rights to. As such, it’s strange that they aren’t covering the ODIs even though they (seemingly) now have the rights to broadcast them.

That though means the ABC gets to enjoy something they haven’t had in recent years - radio exclusivity

It is a bit strange they don’t do it, in my view, I would of thought SEN, the home of live sport, no matter the form of international cricket I would of thought SEN would’ve jumped at the opportunity. Especially to help launch the 1170 station in Sydney given MSR had the rights and did bring the one day games into Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Its is also India. Probably the 2nd most popular team in terms of potential ratings and sponsorship (for a radio station) behind England touring Australia.

I think they were caught a bit by surprise though. Macquarie Radio (now Nine Radio) only recently relinquished the rights. Also knowing how Cricket Australia operate (at least in regards to TV rights!) maybe they infact wanted more money from SEN if they were to pick up the ODI rights too.

For those who can’t afford/don’t want to subscribe to Fork (out a wad of cash)-stel, radio would be the next best option. Not exclusively the province of Trevor on his tractor in Trangie anymore.

ABC’s commentary team for the first ODI between Australia and India: Jim Maxwell, Brett Sprigg, Andrew Moore, Ed Cowan, Alex Blackwell and Stuart Clark.

Ian Chappell and Callum Ferguson (captain of BBL’s Sydney Thunder) will join the line-up for game two on Sunday, replacing Cowan and Clark.

Isn’t SEN meant to have the radio rights? They don’t seem to be broadcasting the cricket today/=.

Seems like they elected not to broadcast. Maybe CA wanted more money?

Well SEN are doing the match. From studio it seems. Due to travel restrictions they can’t go.

Yes, SEN is covering all three matches of the Twenty20 series. If Canberrans want to listen to the call they will have to download the SEN app.

Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar will not only be part of Seven’s commentary team for the upcoming test series between Australia and India, but also make a presence at ABC Radio’s commentary box during the tests. This afternoon he had a three-way chat with ABC Grandstand host Matt Clinch and Aussie great Ian Chappell.

The answer to your question will be heard tonight when coverage of the 2nd T20 match between Australia & India moves to 1539 AM (SEN Track) at 9pm to accommodate The Spirt of Sport airing on 1170 AM.

Thanks, I assume the same could happen in the test series which would finish at 10pm for Adelaide test.

Well it wasn’t 1539 am on Sydney when I tuned in. I could tune into SEN Melbourne digital to get it. It’s interesting how the church still has control of 1170 SEN. Even dab SEN Sydney had the spirit of sport show.

Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin is joining SEN for its coverage of Australia-India test series this summer, joining fellow experts Damien Fleming, Simon Katich, Chris Rogers (coach of Victorian men’s team), Lisa Sthalekar, Simon O’Donnell and Ryan Harris.
The commentary team for Big Bash League consists of Dwayne Russell, Andy Maher, Jack Heverin, Sam Hargreaves, Darren Berry, Simon Katich, Bryce McGain and Brad Hodge.

It’s interesting it is only Big bash nation, no reference to SEN radio. Are any stations outside of SEN taking the coverage like on the super radio network?

Noted that this afternoons game they are not broadcasting. It’s SENTrack instead.
