Cricket on Radio

So it’s ok to put it on SENtrack, it doesn’t breach the rules as cricket has a wider audience/appeal. I noted Gosford and Wollongong is missing.

ABC Radio is covering 49 WBBL matches this season, starting today in Sydney. 20 of those 49 matches will also be broadcast in UK on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra.

According to News Corp, Ian Chappell will be a ‘guest’ commentator for ABC’s cricket coverage this summer. He’ll be alongside Jim Maxwell who will once again head up their coverage.

Get SEN to Tasmania now!

Bit more info, not behind the paywall. Also a mention of the ABC Sport re-branding,noticed my radio updated over the weekend. Don’t mind Chappelli on the radio, made the Fairfax/Macquarie coverage worth listening to.

I wonder where are the other commentators for the now defunct MSR go? I think I heard Bruce Eva working for Cricket Australia doing the shield cricket. Ian Chappell will be on the ABC. Tim Lane will just focus on AFL?

Bruce Eva and Tim Lane still do footy for 3AW

Lane though does the cricket test matches for Channel Seven

Yes of course he is on Channel 7. No issues with working with Nine on radio / Channel 7 on TV then that is good. Pardon my ignorance, I am not so clear on the AFL commentators, as I am league fan in NSW .

Haven’t noticed Beva doing any but I did notice Peter Walsh doing the SA v Vic match last week, good to hear his voice again calling cricket.

Bruce was doing NSW vs Tassie. The commentary teams for the shield matches have has excellent. It’s more radio like. SEN or the ABC sports digital channel should simulcast. The cricket has been great to watch, such an underrated comp. Imagine the IPL players were back to play.

Yes, but they have other shows and sports to cover, which would mean an incomplete simulcast. Also, while it is radio like, they still refer to vision (eg “look at that”), so it would be weird on the radio.

Yeah they would need to adapt the coverage a bit to allow for the radio audience.

If only we were getting a BBL hub in Hobart, oh hang on…

So SEN will be calling games no one locally can hear on the radio…

SEN owns 1629 AM in (near) Hobart. Can you find out what the delay is, please?

SEN could buy some DAB spectrum there too.

Lack of local radio coverage has been the main problem ever since the Hobart Hurricanes entered the BBL. Why CA neglected to sign up a Hobart-based station to broadcast home matches at Bellerive still puzzles me.

I agree, I resort to the app.

I can’t imagine that one of the local stations wouldn’t take it on, but I suspect the price might be a wee bit high.

Whats the arrangement when they play BBL in Canberra?

I believe CA should allow the ABC to also have rights as well. Like they did some time back. ABC Grandstand Digital use to bring the big bash.

My suggestion would be that in any area where no commercial broadcaster syndicates Big Bash Nation from SEN, then the ABC should be allowed to take it.

Unfortunately the reality of that is very hard and the amount of sponsorship in the Big Bash Nation broadcast would probably be deemed unacceptable to the ABC. The next alternative could be the ABC doing their own coverage that only airs in these areas but I don’t think SEN would allow that given they’ve spent the big bucks to be the holder of all radio rights and it would also be cost prohibitive for the ABC anyway.

Yes, a bit like Radio Sport NZ (now no longer exists) did with the ABC.
