COVID-19: Melbourne/Greater Victoria Re-Opens

I thought their drive thru would remain open for emergency workers etc

That would surely be because no announcements were made of businesses. Those announcements will be coming today. I can’t see how a person could go to a hairdresser and be within the rules.

Some might be able to do that but for most stores it wouldn’t be worth their while. I reckon a select few stores might do it but a lot will shut. Some stores might stay a bit later past 8pm if Uber eats etc can still do deliveries (would still be considered work post curfew for the drivers) or maybe certain ones near hospitals / police stations might do longer hours. I can think of one near the Alfred for example.

Yes I definitely think we need some longer term approaches and some of these rules should stay in place at least for a little while on the other side. As things open up again if supermarkets/shopping centres limiting the number per household that can shop at a time, enforcing masks etc remain in place it will definitely reduce the risk of transmission and drive down the crowds. These environments are what people always seem to complain about as getting busy again.

O’Brien is irrelevant! Andrews didn’t ‘plunge’ Victoria into Stage 4 all on his own! Victorian opposition needs to get on board and be constructive and forget the politics for a while.

It seems that despite Victoria being a very progressive/left-wing state, they seem to produce far more right-wing conservative media personalities than anywhere else in the country, with particularly vigorous conservatism in the Liberal Party compared to what I’ve seen in NSW.

Slammed? Almost every poll that I’ve seen on social media has 80-90% supporting the lockdown. Nobody enjoys a lockdown but everyone knows it needs to be done. I’m only annoyed that this is dragging on longer than it should have needed too and wish we went this hard sooner
but I guess that’s easy to say in hindsight. Let’s suck this up for a few weeks, get on top of it and move forward.

Victoria has a lot more extremists on both sides of politics than other states, over time this has spilled into the media a little.

However it’s important to note these are far more niche / have a very limited audience compared to Sydney where talk radio like 2GB dominates so strongly.

Please do not get me started on the Liberal Opposition. Not one positive comment have come from them since the beginning of this pandemic. They seem to criticise everything but never come up with something that could help the situation. All they seem to do is attack, attack, attack. If they were in Andrews’ shoes what would they have done differently?

They pushed and pushed the State Government for restrictions to be eased and when they were, they were calling for them to be reinstated. Couldn’t win there.

My mother asked on the phone yesterday who is the guy with the glasses. I replied with, that’s Michael O’Brien the Liberal Opposition Leader . No one else probably knows who he is either. O’Brien who?

Come the 2022 Election, we’ll probably see Andrews’ win in a landslide victory again. Which to me is a good thing.

On a different note, I went for my daily exercise today and I honestly can’t believe how quiet it was (which is a good thing) and on the roads too. Yesterday, it was every Tom, Dick and Harry out in groups now today I only saw a handful people. Hopefully other people will now start to listen and take note of the new restrictions and obey them.

At least I am not the only person who has noticed this. I cannot stand Michael O’Brien.

It’s not.

We need a sensible opposition: while Andrews is by far the least worst option, I cannot stand how some online seem to elevate him to sainthood for making the same mistakes that would have a Liberal premier scorned for life. And yet, all O’Brien and Smith et. al. seem capable of doing is changing their positions by the day.

Possibly the difference between a sunny Sunday and a Monday morning
but yes there should be considerably less people out and about. I’m glad that they implemented these changes so quickly because we might start seeing some impacts next week. Now they just need to hurry up and get these new rules in high risk workforces in place.

While Labour might win the next state election, doubt it’ll be another landslide considering the campaign will probably partly be about the government’s handling of this pandemic.

Yesterday’s announcement of stage 4 lockdown has not gone unnoticed in the US. Here is President Donald Trump’s tweet.

Victoria Police issued 172 fines in the past 24 hours. 27 of them were not wearing a face covering.

  • A Keilor resident was travelling to the surf coast to stay at his holiday home
  • A Sunshine resident was found in Melbourne playing PokĂ©mon Go
  • Two Altona residents eating at a fast food premises after a night at a friends place
  • A group were found at a Point Cook rental for a birthday
  • A women was at Southern Cross to head to Bendigo

The Liberals’ tried a scare campaign at the last election and look how that turned out for them.

Some people have lost the plot altogether.

A lot of factors determine how this go. We don’t know if they’ll do that again.
But especially with COVID and the situation VIC is in right now (which is not necessarily the government’s fault) - the focus for many is still thought to be:

Oh come on!

While the current situation in Victoria means we’re doing worse than say
New Zealand or Taiwan, Australia still looks comparatively good compared to the absolute disaster that is the United States and their handling of this virus.

And he’s clearly trying to trigger outrage by using a particular name to call the virus. But let’s not go there again.

According to V/Line website, Victoria Police along with PSOs are enforcing the stage 4 lockdown rules in the community including on public transport services. That’s how that woman was found out at Southern Cross station.
