COVID-19: Impact on Sports & Culture (What do I now do on the weekends?)

Good riddance (probably one of the only good things to come from these restrictions).

NSW Deputy Premier calls for cancellation of Sydney NYE fireworks

Deputy Premier John Barilaro says big drawcard events in Sydney should be cancelled if tourism events in regional NSW cities are called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s something that Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has also flagged, saying it wouldn’t be responsible to have 1 million people cramming around the harbour foreshore to watch fireworks.

“If the regions have to lose big tourism events like the Tamworth Country Music festival, then there is no option but to cancel the big drawcard events in Sydney and the most obvious is the New Year’s Eve fireworks,” Mr Barilaro told the Sydney Morning Herald , and later tweeted.

Aren’t these sort of events paid a year in advance? I know the City of Melbourne is paid a year in advance.

Seven News Sydney had something tonight about plans for the Royal Easter Show to be a dramatically different event in 2021.

I personally think it should take another year off before relaunching in 2022 or whenever in the future it’s safe for large events to return to something resembling pre-pandemic normality. In any case, the Sydney Royal (and probably similar events around the country) has been slowly declining in quality for years before the pandemic and would probably benefit from some extra time off before relaunching IMO.

Even though it states no crowds for the ‘Professional Sports and Racing’ in the Metropolitan Melbourne Roadmap for until November 23rd at the earliest. There is a interesting disclaimer - “major events will be the subject of additional work and further consideration”

Does that mean that we may see some sort of crowds for the Spring Racing Carnival (ie; Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup Carnival) if race clubs have the correct protocols in place to maintain safety standards?

Finally! The NRL has a range of face masks! Yes, I will be getting the Knights one.

Why are they still advertising the hand sanitiser as “new in” my mum found the broncos one at a newsagent back in April.

Probably new into the official store, not elsewhere.

It may depend on event timing, but it wont be a good look if it does.

Both the Melbourne Racing Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club have come out and said that there will be no crowds at the Caulfield Cup Carnival and Cox Plate Carnival respectively.

The next season of Bondi Rescue will be interesting viewing as it will be filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic (provided 10 renews the show of course).

Factory Summer Festival is the first major music event to lock in a Melbourne date since COVID-19 restrictions were implemented in March this year. The 2021 event will be held on March 19 to April 5 with a range of COVID-safe measures in place.

The Myer Christmas Windows at Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall have been cancelled for this year, with the department store announcing the news today due to the Victorian Government’s restrictions.
