The bit where quarantine is a federal responsibility. The fact states feel compelled to create a solution to answer explicitly federal responsibility is bonkers.
There must be a benefit to the states if they are agreeing to it.
They saw what happened with the Ruby Princess and the way the federal Department of Agriculture who are responsible for quarantine handled it. Morrison supported home quarantine once he accepted there was a problem, that wouldâve worked out well.
Australians stuck in COVID-ravaged India could face up to five years in jail and heavy fines if they breach a travel ban to return home.
The temporary ban begins on Monday and applies to any travellers who have visited India within 14 days of their intended arrival date in Australia.
It is understood to be the first time Australia has banned its own citizens from returning, to the point of there being criminal sanctions for those who make it home.

They do, along with subsection IX - quarantine. Incredibly hard posting with kids crawling all over me at times!
Its not solely a federal responsibility - the constitution says that the Commonwealth have the power to make laws in relation to quarantine but it doesnât say that only the commonwealth can.
The responsibility for quarantine has been shared between the Commonwealth and the States for some time

For external arrivals Iâd think itâs solely up to the commonwealth and currently theyâre the ones with the power to do anything. Itâs amazing what they can do when they want to use the Biosecurity Act.

To be, taking race away from it, it just shows how little the Australian government cares about its own citizens. Could you imagine if this was a war? The Australian government probably wouldnât let its own citizens back home where it is safe

there were calls to ban travel from the uk in dec/Jan when so much of the rest of the world did. The govts reason for not doing it was because there were no direct flights, there was nothing they could do to control it. That was clearly bullshit.
