COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

WA Premier Mark McGowan said this afternoon that tests tonight would determine whether another lockdown would be imposed. He said the community would revert back to mandatory masks both indoors and out.

If your citizenship does not allow for safe passage ā€œhomeā€ during times of crisis then it’s rendered useless. It’s the most basic and fundamental right that comes with citizenship. To make it illegal and a criminal offence punishable by jail to try and exercise that most basic principle and right of your citizenship is shameful. A new low for our country.

This is not about safety - it’s about optics. Australia was perfectly fine for hundreds of celebrities and sports stars to fly in from continents with infection rates FAR above India’s current levels, even taking into account drastic under counting.

This is not about safety. This is about politics, optics and games

Really shameful way to treat Australians

There is no need for lockdowns unless he picks up half a dozen cases in a day.

Manage it like other states have done without the madness.

It would be in his best political interests to show the state he can manage a couple of cases without locking down the place. Otherwise the tables are going to turn against him soon. I don’t think people will sit idle as he closed and opens on a monthly bases while the east coast can navigate its way out of much larger outbreaks without the harsh reaction.

Nobody really challenges them over there as the mood I get on the east coast, is nobody really gives two shits about WA and what happens over there. Good luck to them seems to be the common message. The majority of them voted him, they can now deal with the outcome.

Personally I think returning to lockdown is highly unlikely considering the restrictions in place this week would largely reduce the potential risk of spread, however going back to the restrictions Perth/Peel had between Tuesday and Friday may occur depending on whether the 7 other individuals sharing this guys house all test positive and just how big the number of close and casual contacts could potentially grow.

It’ll be very interesting to see if the AFL goes ahead tomorrow, as that’s a potential crowd of just about 45,000. If it goes ahead that will set a significant precedent towards trending away from snap lockdowns and towards more of what we’ve seen elsewhere, particular in VIC and NSW earlier in 2021.

Don’t worry, the ā€œnationalā€ Sydney media shows off this attitude pretty clearly. The Guardian live blog in particular was a fun read this week during the press conferences.

However this attitude definitely spreads to sections of the federal government, and I suspect there’s significant pressure to not enact lockdowns post-JobKeeper because they know the chance of a hand-out from the feds is very, very low considering the circumstances.

I strongly agree and am totally embarrassed at how the government has treated citizens.

That’s because (as the recent election shows) the overwhelming majority of people there support the zero-tolerance approach which McGowan’s government has taken to dealing with the Coronavirus. Another factor is the cult of personality that surrounds McGowan in the state - a lot of people think he can do nothing wrong

I’m surprised most people can’t see that many policies in Australia are not about safety but about politics optics and winning votes.

Australia has never cared this much about health risks that pose far greater threat to the Australian population this much before

I hope for God’s sakes that we don’t go into another lockdown. However, the list is far worse this time around than it was a week ago. Boy do people get around in a few days.

Regarding yesterday’s new positive case in Perth, NSW Health said in a series of tweets:

The Western Australian Government yesterday announced a Perth hotel quarantine worker and two of his household contacts had tested positive to COVID-19, and published a list of venues of concern these positive cases visited while potentially infectious.

Prior to travelling to NSW, anyone who has been in Perth since Tuesday 27 April should immediately check the NSW COVID-19 concerns notice and exemption to determine whether they have been to any places of high concern.

Anyone currently in NSW who has been in Perth since Tuesday 27 April should immediately check if they have been in a place of high concern. If you have attended any of these venues at the relevant times, please immediately isolate, get tested, and call NSW Health on 1800 943 553.

NSW Health reminds all travellers that there continues to be a requirement to complete an entry declaration if you have been in WA in the previous 14 days before entering NSW. NSW Health is working closely with our counterparts in WA and will update advice as necessary to ensure the safety of the NSW community.

NSW Health has begun contacting people who have arrived from Perth since Tuesday 27 April, and deployed screening teams to Sydney Airport from 5.30am today (Sunday 2 May) to meet new arrivals.

As these latest cases in Perth show, COVID-19 can re-emerge at any time.

Australia has for some time elected to treat Australians abroad abysmally, but it generally never got decent coverage so many people dont realise. COVID has just seen an extension of this.

No, it’s about pandering to bedwetters - rather than trying to build a more resilient system to allow people to safely enter the country and do quarantine, it’s easier (and cheaper) to simply remove the problem by not letting people in.

Continually resorting to snap lockdowns is an unsustainable model (especially where outwardly they appear to achieve little) not to mention that it shows an inability to adequately cope with the problem at hand - why should the feds provide support in those circumstances?

It’s concerning that there are a lot of people who seem to be horny for lockdowns thinking that it’s the first (and often only) response to the situation.

According to Mark McGowan press conference, Perth will not go back to lockdown. However, Nightclubs are also forced to close. This came where 156 contacts were confirmed form the security guard who was tested positive to COVID-19 and his two house mates, who are both food delivery drivers.

I don’t see anything wrong with this at all. Until the pandemic calms down, the decisions of those stuck overseas (aussies or British) by living overseas does not give the automatically give them the right to come home during a pandemic.

Well what would you suggest ?

Ummm well it does actually. If you hold a citzenship it’s the responsibility of our government to protect them. Some of these people have outstayed visas. A citizen has an automatic right of entry into australia.

Can someone explain this to me. Whilst it’s all outrage over the governments decision, but if you don’t do the wrong thing (as in enter illegally) you won’t be subject to any fines or punishment? Isn’t this ā€˜update’ just to stop people illegally entering and endangering the community?

Didn’t we see some people (cricketers) recently use loopholes to get them here?

It does actually. That’s exactly what citizenship is. The legal right to enter your country. Especially during times of crisis. It’s the most basic fundamental right of citizenship.

The government has made it a punishable illegal act for citizens to enter Their own country.

As far as I know this is unprecedented in history - for any country.

It’s staggering, over a year on and we still haven’t worked out a proper resettlement scheme. Not hotel quarantine which doesn’t work. We need these bloody outdoor, portable venues set up. Avalon could have been set up about 12 times since this started. It’s an airport, not far from two major hospitals with the ability to use heli-vacs, and has loads of space away from the general population.

Agree. The Feds are not doing enough. It’s mind boggling.
