COVID-19: Discussion of Impact šŸ˜·

agree to disagree

From what I am reading the change is that the mask law will no longer be enforced by police. They still want the masks to be worn in the situations that were before but are no longer going to have a fine.

So you donā€™t want anyone wearing masks anymore even though they are recommended by the health official?

well as the premier said if you know who you are working with then no

No that isnā€™t what I said they are only highly recommended in settings indoor and outdoors when 1.5 m distancing cannot be maintained. Do you mind people not following that advise now?

NSW Police admit fault over international arrivals bypassing quarantine

New South Wales Police has admitted it incorrectly allowed two German travellers to proceed to Melbourne after flying-in to Sydney yesterday.

In a statement Police say the 53-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy were screened by New South Wales Health and directed to board a hotel quarantine bus.

They say the pair then advised Police they were booked on a flight to Melbourne and officers subsequently allowed the pair to travel on a domestic flight under standard protocols for exempt travellers.

But on arrival in Melbourne the pair were not in possession of an approved exemption and were escorted to hotel quarantine where they remain.

New South Wales Police says a review has been conducted and practices and systems at the airport have been strengthened as a result of the incident.

Apparently it was a Melbourne Airport security guard that alerted DHHS as the stories for the two international travellers didnā€™t add up.

2 out of 100,000 isnā€™t bad.

While fault undoubtably lies with NSW Police, you do have to wonder how the conversation went and what information the travellers provided to be allowed to proceed to the domestic terminal.

I am more worried about how many other ā€˜exemptionsā€™ there are. If you let 2 through the cracks there must be a lot more exemptions.

According to NSW Health, there arent many reasons why an exemption would be granted - most are around health/compassion grounds and there are provisions that allow for transiting people as well as those who are piloting planes/ships

One of the statements earlier today suggested that the two people told NSW Police they had an exemption which they then enquired into and then waved them through

I just wonder whether anyone with an exemption should be provided with an ankle bracelet to track whereabouts. There will be a point in the not so distant future where quarantining will be at home so they really need to be thinking about this.

ABC News Radio spoke to a CTV reporter this morning regarding the COVID-19 situation in Canada. The number of cases and deaths are very high (over 410,000 cases and 12,642 deaths) despite a travel ban between Canada and USA.

Also it seems a lot of people are confused about the mask rule that was changed yesterday. I do think they just needed to keep this simple. Masks should be worn so just say wear a mask.

38 consecutive days of no new locally acquired cases in Victoria.

With hotel quarantine resuming in Melbourne today with 253 people arriving across eight flights, we could see a new category added to the DHHS table later this week.

Meanwhile in NSWā€¦

Itā€™s not that confusing. Wear them in high density indoor environments like shopping centres and supermarkets - all other indoor venues are ok to go mask-free i.e. restaurants etc - they donā€™t really serve a purpose in those environments anyway given most people are sitting down and not wearing a mask whilst theyā€™re eating/drinking.

I went to the gym this morning and the requirement to wear a mask while entering only to take it off while exercising is now scrapped - it made no sense anyway and didnā€™t serve a useful purpose given people were not wearing them inside once they were past the entrance.

The mask rules now are common sense and Iā€™m fine with them.

You might not find it confusing but there is a lot of people that is confused by it. Apparently blogs are getting a lot of questions regarding the masks. The fact only large shopping centres are in there people are questioning then whether they need to wear a mask in a boutique shop or along chapel st. A simple wear a mask is a better rule than adding to the confusion and creating complacency.

I wouldnā€™t trust a lot of people have common sense.

I am still very concerned about South Australia. Only 1,400 tests done in the last 24 hours. I think for a state just coming out of an outbreak they really should be getting closer to that 5,000 tests every day.
