COVID-19: Discussion of Impact 😷

Then why is melbourne back in lockdown? The Victorian premier said they didn’t want to overwhelm the contract tracing system. So why isn’t the app doing its job?

The prime minister hyped about the app and said this was the way we were going to trace it. It has been a massive failure. Yes it was rushed, yes it might not have cost too much. But why hype it up and make people download it if it isn’t going to do a job and why aren’t they trying to improve it! The concept is a good idea.

If Melbourne goes into stage 4 then all the current construction work will have to stop surely? That means projects like Melbourne Metro Tunnel, North East Link and West Gate Tunnel will face further delays, and a section of Frankston railway line between Cheltenham and Mentone, which was closed in late May for level crossing removal works, may not be able to reopen at the end of this month as planned.

They are only rumours and only would happen if numbers didn’t start to decline.

Exactly. Rumours. Probably sparked by the media constantly putting these stupid headlines the past couple of days like “stage 4 restrictions COULD be imposed” and “the 6 weeks COULD be extended”. If the Government were considering this they would not be “waiting” until next week, they would be doing it now. Not to say it won’t be something they might consider if cases keep increasing but we havn’t even seen the full impact of lockdowns on numbers yet. Lets just wait and see what happens.

I assume stage 4 would cut into some of the more essential industries that we saw restricted overseas like freight, meatworks, garbage collection, public transport and elective surgery?

It would be very restrictive and could not be maintained for more that a few weeks. It should be kept in the arsenal for when/if we get to a Lombardy or Florida type outbreak, as a desperate measure to prevent hospitals from bursting capacity. We are nowhere near that.

Yes, but people were sold on downloading the app because of the Government’s terrible messaging that it would make you safe (which was complete crap regardless of whether it worked or not).

Because it doesnt work properly on a large portion of devices that its installed on (Apple iOS)

What numbers are we expecting in NSW tomorrow (Wednesday)?

Numbers just shy of 20-25 I think.

If it is more, we are in some trouble.

It will probably be included in the lockdown now

Only 13 cases in NSW. 10 related to Casula cluster.

Doesn’t look as bad as we once thought it could be. They health authorities there have been quite quick.

Any idea on how many tests?

Brett Sutton (CMO) talked today similar to how I’ve been thinking that the numbers appear to have stabilised the last few days and the initial localised lockdowns could be a contributor towards this. He also hopes that by the end of the week we could be seeing the impact of broader lockdowns in numbers.

Really hoping this has been the peak and it can start driving down in the coming days.

I think they said around 21k or 22k. They mentioned that the numbers are slightly lower in testing than last week as less people are out and about this week, so they don’t have the need to get tested or are less likely to randomly test.
