Big traffic jams getting into Queensland as the border opened today at 12pm. It wasn’t just the Gold Coast.

Barringun (near Cunnamulla) where there was heavy rain as well today.

Just had to go for a drive to our new home we are moving into (in the middle of this mess :man_facepalming:) and it’s very evident that traffic is very low again. Encouraging signs. As the Premier also mentioned.

The cold and wet weather this weekend is probably a good thing.

The USA recorded over 71,000 new cases yesterday.

Big day for international covid stats.

  • 237,000 new cases worldwide, another new record.
  • South Aftrica well on their way to being the next epicentre, 12,000 new cases yesterday with 250,000+ cases, overtaking Italy.
  • Spain’s numbers are inching up again, 850 new cases yesterday after spending most of the last 2 months under 400 new cases, they are now part of the 300,000+ total cases group.
  • USA had an incredible 71,787 new cases, numbers have more than tripled in a month. florida, texas and california are all at the point New york was at its peak.
  • USA has a total of almost 3.3mil cases, meaning they are probably 1 day away from 1% of their population being part of the statistics.
  • Canada seems to be doing remarkable well considering their location. only 321 cases yesterday, and it has been lower recently.
  • Israel could show a concerning picture what is is store for Victoria, similar population and GDP per cap, and first wave peaked at the same time and similar level. 2 weeks ago Israel was in the high 200’s per day, and were in lockdown, now they are at 1,400.

Not completely accurate. Israel only imposed new restrictions earlier this week after having hitting 1000 case days. A week ago bars, gyms etc were all open over there. I think we will have avoided that having the localised lockdowns already in place for 10 days, hopefully we see the benefit of that during the week. It is interesting though that they were on a similar path to us and their second wave has been similar timing.

Because of the USA border closure it seems. Though the USA is now pressuring Canada to start to reopen the border from late July.

Sounds very much like a repeat of NSW pressuring QLD to reopen its border, big brother vs little brother when the latter is managing the outbreak better.

Returning travellers will need to cover $3000 of the costs in NSW from Saturday. If they booked their flight before the 12th of July and fly in after that date they will not be required to pay. Seems fairly steep but people have had 4 months to decide to get home.

$3000 for 14 days food and accommodation is pretty good value

It is. I mean 14 days for coming home could be pretty steep for some people when some have a place to do it for free. But I can understand why the government is doing it and they have been generous and given plenty of time.

Once one state commenced charging, the others were always going to follow - it will probably also help with lowering the numbers of arrivals.

The flipside to that argument has been people living overseas needing to return home briefly for unforeseen emergencies.

Though either way having to do a 14 day quarantine regardless may make such visits pointless.

I agree that otherwise, people have had enough time to organise a flight back by now.
