South East Queensland drenched as rare weather event delivers a month’s rain

South East Queensland has been drenched by up to 100mm of rainfall in one day due to a rare weather phenomenon that still has a sting left in its tail.

Soaking rainfall has been observed from the Sunshine Coast through Brisbane to the Gold Coast, with up to 100mm falling from Sunday night into Monday morning.

The rainfall is being caused by a northwest cloud band that stretches 4000km from Darwin to east of Melbourne which is moving eastwards after it brought heavy rainfall to outback Queensland.

A suspected meteor has been captured shining above the Sydney skyline on Thursday night, shocking onlookers who watched the unexpected cosmic show unfold from their vehicles and verandahs.

The meteor was seen almost exploding like a fireball at about 6.30pm. Dashcam footage from several cars across the city shows the meteor hurtling through the air, before burning up and combusting in a sudden orange explosion.

Witnesses posting to social media claimed the meteorite was seen from the South Coast, Dubbo and Bathurst, among other areas. Australian National University Associate Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics Brad Tucker saw the meteorite from Canberra, telling this masthead he estimated it to be 30 to 50 centimetres in size, which he said, “may not seem big, but they are super dense so [it] put on quite the show”.

IT’S ALIENS!

Apparently we’re heading into an El Nino, but we’ve only had three days without any rain in the last 2 weeks and showers are forecast every day until Sunday! :frowning:

The coast sure is getting it, but some inland parts are very dry ,hopefully this coming event will deliver but I won’t believe it till I see it.

Doesn’t mean it automatically becomes dry, give it 6-9 months.

Obviously India is the world’s hottest nation. Thank heavens tomorrow will be the last day of this nightmare.

The pre monsoon period (May and early June) in India/Pakistan is always fairly stifling, though. As far as the anomalies go it’s not that spectacular (right hand side).

We are suffering much greater anomalies here in SE Australia. It’s probably going to be the warmest May on record for mean temperature here in Canberra; I’ve barely used the heater so far. At least we are getting some rain.

Going to the footy Sunday night so will be interesting

So just checked a sky cam and it does actually look bad, how does it compare to Narelle?

This one is only maxed out at Category 2 - not even a severe storm like Narelle was.

Victoria braces for wild weather with damaging winds and blizzard condition warnings

A major weather system will kick off early in the day across the city, bringing a cold front and damaging winds — with warnings of blizzard conditions in some areas of the state.

Melbourne’s bayside suburbs can expect to be the hardest hit by torrential rain.

Suburbs like Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham and Beaumaris can expect to receive 50mm of rain in just 12 hours, which would normally be just one month’s worth of winter rain.

Forecasts show the eastern suburbs will receive 30mm while the western suburbs will cop 10mm.
