Last night, Australian landmarks including Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Luna Park Sydney, Brisbane’s Story Bridge, Melbourne’s AAMI Park, The Wheel of Brisbane and Perth’s Bell Tower, went dark for one hour at 8.30pm local time.
Initially it was recorded as 7.6 and 7.8. Since then, the PTWC has declared tsunami threat “largely passed”.
The NZ MetService has placed the entire North Island under preliminary wind watch for this Sunday, as Cyclone Vaianu travels down south after wreaking parts of Fiji.

Love our Aussie centric news and how different we report things when it impacts another country, just “Aussie tourists warned of wet weekend” ![]()
And like clockwork, social media is lit up with wild conspiracy theories…
I think it’s more a case of ancient oil refinery plant & equipment and/or possibly skimping on maintenance causing the fire. Shell Oil did sweat-the-asset before they flogged it off to VIVA.
So here in Kalgoorlie today, 34 degrees with 18% humidity and a dew point of 6 degrees.
But it’s the hot 40 kmh northerlies that are not very pleasant
Its okay if you can get a spot in the shade and out of the wind though.
But it’s really a bit too late in autumn to be getting weather this hot in the south of the country.
Thankfully back to 23 tomorrow for the long drive back to Perth!
Ouch. You’ve learned the hard way that it can get hot in the outback (even in the south) at any time of year…Ceduna is the same.
It’s unseasonably warm right across the south though, even Melbourne is endless mid 20s, Adelaide endless high 20s. At least it’s only the high teens to low 20s here with frosts in the morning, making it more autumnal than anywhere else on the mainland. Because of the relative warmth and lack of wind, they are really going to town with hazard reduction burning. The smoke in Canberra has been shocking the past couple of mornings, the worst smoke since 2019-20.
