Climate, Weather and Emergencies

I don’t feel the cold as much anymore either because of my extra body ‘insulation’. When I was at work all the skinny women used to be wearing jackets if the morning temperature was about 15-16 degrees ,for me that was pleasant ,I’d only wear my jacket if it was below 10 degrees ,usually about June -July
I’m over summer already ,can’t wait for winter or what amounts for winter in most of Qld.
It’s also difficult for me to force myself to go for a walk for exercise in these conditions ,hate feeling hot and sweaty😡

At this time of year, I go for a walk (45-60 mins) shortly after I get out of bed, then have a shower when I get home so I can feel clean again.

It was Darwinian in Brisbane today with sustained dewpoints of 26-27C combined with air temps in the mid 30s. That’s absolutely brutal and I don’t blame anyone for complaining. Darwin is appropriately named; it’s an exercise in evolutionary biology to survive and thrive in such a climate.

It must have been horrendous for the players and spectators at the Gabba. On the positive side, this should make it plain that scheduling a test match in Brisbane in January is about as foolish as it gets. Oh, and it’s likely to rain most of tomorrow and Monday, as is usually the case with a huge build up of humidity in the tropics.***

*** I think Brisbane is now firmly in the tropics, with Sydney not too far behind. And Canberra unfortunately is moving to a humid summer climate as well; traditionally we have a dry summer climate like Adelaide so it’s quite a transition.

The good news is Brisbane will experience a (much) cooler week, with max temps in the high 20s. Lower humidity next week is a bonus as well.

The bad news is that:

  • 1. Minimums next week are in the mid 20s, so warm nights may be ahead. (Today was the warmest night in Bris. since Feb. 2017!)

  • 2. Due to the extreme humidity that has been building up the last few days, next week is shaping up to be a intensly wet end to January.

IMO it is a genuine biological marvel that humans can inhabit a place like Darwin.

Just looking at some of the QLD regional forecasts and OMG!!

Yeppoon currently with a dew point of 25.8, and overnight mins of 27-28 for the next couple of days.

Sounds truly awful, @tv_Addict how bad is it there?

8C here this morning, coolest in a long time. It actually felt cold as well. The humidity is back on Tuesday however.

I would give my right leg for a single digit morning. Haven’t seen one since September.

The last two days are the worst two I’ve felt in a long time. Friday was insanely humid if not as hot, and yesterday was just unbearable. We were outside all morning for a friend’s (pre-planned) birthday party and even in the shade it was disgusting.

The rain smashes through overnight and dropped the temperature by 10 degrees, for which I am thankful. Still horribly humid but that’s far more tolerable at 25 degrees than it is at 35.

Yes, single digit, just not with a minus sign in front of it, or one that is in Fahrenheit!

Too much of any type of weather can be uncomfortable and it’s the same at the cold end of the spectrum. It’s just that the cold end is very muted in Australia and no populated areas are snow bound for any length of time. We don’t have to deal with the joys of shovelling snow, slick roads, power outages due to ice storms etc. Thank goodness, because we get more than enough extreme weather in the warm season. I pity places like the Midwest US who get extreme weather almost every month of the year.

The worst winter weather in Australia is probably wind, and that’s generally confined to southern Victoria, SW WA and Tasmania. I live in one of the coldest places in Australia for absolute minimum temperature, but I don’t really feel it until it gets -5C or below.

I lived in Perth and it only got around 12 deg during the day about 3 times in the 7 years I was there. Never was cold just the mornings and overnight (similar to Qld)

Well it’s ok inside but as soon as I walked outside to put the washing out I start developing beads of sweat. Dew point has been hitting as high as 28 deg here.

Also though we have had strong NE winds which the past few days so has made some what of a difference keeping the feels like temp around 31 deg in the afternoon instead of 34 or 35.

The feels like was around 33-34 deg last night with a min of 28.1 deg. Townsville had it even worse

We only have a split in the master bedroom (not mine) and in the lounge both of those rooms face west. I can sleep fine with the fan on medium in my east facing room . I think to myself we won’t see this weather in 12 weeks from now surely …

It was muggy like this 2 years ago the difference was the nights were not as hot and it was a La Nina.

Will SST’s ever drop…

Looking forward to another higher than average electricity bill again because of the extra use of my air con.Thank goodness I received a rebate on my recent one from the Qld government that saved me about $140 ,every bit helps👍

It’s really awful , even working a 4-5 hour volunteer shift at the RSPCA in the laundry room was exhausting for me.,especially when I was outside emptying out the wheelie bins of dirty laundry .Yesterday another lady was there with me ,she didn’t have the air con going ,as soon as she left I had it going

I’m actually enjoying this Melbourne weather at the moment. We haven’t seen such stable conditions in years. Pretty much is 20 ish degrees with the odd peak 30degree day and a few mid 20s before it pulls back again. Most of Feb seems like it will be 22/23/24, the odd 30 degree day otherwise nothing uncomfortable.

Everywhere else around Oz seems pretty volatile.

That’s the coolness of Bass Strait working its magic. The Tasman Sea is hot, so Sydney is hot and humid by default unless there’s a big push of southerly air. Canberra gets a bit of Melbourne’s mildness at night but it’s more Sydney like during the day.

Dew Point 23 degrees here in Newcastle. Temp 27 degrees and 80% relative humidity. Feels like I’m in Queensland.

I’ve just been for a 1 hour walk and I’m soaked.

Looks like dewpoints will return to normal (20-21C) in Brisbane tomorrow and extending through until at least the weekend:

You’re right, the dewpoint is showing 23C at Williamtown RAAF at the moment. Dewpoints will also get to the high teens here today, though it isn’t that bad yet.
