1m of rain ?!
The aftermath rain event from this one could be more damaging vs the day itās makes landfall. Itās the 5/7 days after it arrives Iād be worried about.
Considerable rain over the coming fortnight.
Some of the longer range models seem to show improvement as we head into weeks 2 onwards in Feb. The next few weeks QLD needs to be prepared to get belted by rain.
The place to be seems to be Melbourne. Pretty stable and nothing too volatile, long range forecasts are not showing anything too crazy over the coming 4-6 weeks either.
One thing Iāve wonderedā¦
Places like New York City are approx 40.6 latitude north, Hobart is further away from the equator at approx 42.9 latitude south.
Yet NYC seems to get a lot colder in winter than Hobart does.
Does the increased water mass in the southern hemisphere compensate for that, or is there another reason?
NYC is close to the Atlantic Ocean, so it is easily affected by north easterly currents from the Arctic.
How is that any different to southerly curents from the Antarctic?
Pretty sure @dxnerd explained this to me once. Iāll try to recall, but essentially the Southern Ocean keeps a constant more mild temperature which moderates winds blowing into Southern Australia from Antarctica, whereas in the US/Canada that wind blows straight from the Arctic over land, so nothing is there to buffer those parts from the cold air.
Yes thatās right. North America has land all the way to the Arctic Circle and beyond, so polar air masses arenāt moderated by the ocean east of the Rockies. Thatās why places like Houston and New Orleans see the occasional fall of snow; these places are equivalent to northern NSW in terms of latitude.
The west coast of the US is much more like Australia; most cold air is moderated by the Pacific Ocean. The limit of sea level snow is usually southern Oregon (equivalent to Tassieās latitudes) though you can get the very occasional freak fall further south.
The Rockies themselves tend to block cold air masses arriving from the east and north east. There is the occasional straight northerly airstream that produces wacky snow in California, so the chances of snow are still better than in Australia which has nothing but ocean to its south.
In the Midwest US thereās nothing to block humid Gulf Of Mexico air from reaching a long way north, either. The clash of unmoderated heat and unmoderated cold is responsible for the legendary severe storms and tornadoes in the region. Minneapolis has recorded dewpoints above 25C in summer.
Great! Thanks @dxnerd and @tamago_otoko !
Suspected it was due to difference in water/land mass.
The air feels like slime here today - dew points around 25-26 across SEQ. Not overly hot, just oppresively humid.
Tomorrow is supposed to be 37, and if this humidity stays with it, Iām not sure how I will cope.
Usually the humidity drops when the temperature rises.
Been 40 degrees here in Newcastle today, but only 25% humidity. But it was not pleasant with the hot westerly winds.
Cool change coming through right now, which is a godsend.
In my air con
I just had mine on for 30 hours straight with 39 degrees yesterday, 24 last last night and 40 degrees today.
Not very often i do that though.
With another heatwave warning for most of Qld again, mainly the south east ,mine will be running all the time when Iām home ,.
only if the minimum temperature falls below 22 degrees thatās when I feel like I donāt need it on at night
I canāt fathom why a highly educated man such yourself moved from temperate Geelong to putrid Brisbane.
Thereās a simple answer to that, and she has two X chromosomes and a bitter dislike for the cold. Sheād sooner have us living in Darwin before Victoria againā¦
It doesnāt help that Iām now about 20kg heavier than I was when I lived down there last. So when I lived in the cold climate the chill went straight to the bones, now I live in a warm climate with an added layer of insulation I donāt want or need. Granted I could (and should) fix that, but still doesnāt help.
Thatās why I feel the heat so much now than when I was in my 20s and weighed about 20 to 25 kgs less
I think i can relate to that, as Iām less inclined to get outside and exercise when its hot and humidā¦ As Iāve parked myself in front of the air con for most of the last two days.
I used to feel cranky and irritable when I was working in my former workplace on days of heat and very high humidity ,
Iād also feel like I had ābrain fogā and exhaustion too .I would pour water over my head, down the back of my shirt and wet myself . There was no way I was going to wear my hi viz work shirts ,Iād wear a cotton shirt with a hi viz vest over the top .I would usually remove my vest while at my work area and only put it on if I had to walk through an area where thereās forklifts operating .
So glad I got out of there when I didš”
I hate humidity. One reason I couldnāt move up north. Iām use to a dry heat.
