Christmas Vacation on Christmas Eve? When did the tradition with Christmas Vacation airing on Channel 9 on Christmas Day actually begin?

I remember after having breakfast, I caught up watching some shows including a new episode of The Shak on Xmas Day followed by The Three Fathers of Xmas. I also caught up some episodes of Video Hits Presents after lunch. Then I switched to Channel 9 to watch Carols by Candlelight hosted by Ray Martin.
Overall, it was a very quiet schedule with repeats and shortened ABC News and Ten News.

Continuing on with the discussion of Sydney 2000 Olympics Television coverage (Given that 25 years will be marked in 2025), as you can see, on September 15, for viewers in Western Australia, the Opening Ceremony took place during a large chunk of ABC, Nine and 10’s usual late afternoon and early evening network-wide schedules which still aired three hours later than most of the country.

While South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland continued to receive the respective state-based editions of 10 News at Five as well as National Nine News and ABC News at the usual times, Seven News Western Australia was not shown until the closing ceremony concluded at 7:30 PM and Seven News Queensland: Brisbane edition was shown early at 5:00 PM with Seven News South Australia airing at 5:30 PM.

Opening ceremony I mean.

Interesting that Seven ran Sunrise on Christmas morning and Ten still had its late night news on Christmas Day. I never knew this.

Also note that the ABC had local state editions on Christmas Day.

I noticed that ABC and Nine airing 2000 Today and Millennium Live respectively Live across Australia. Over on Nine Perth, they screened the Flagship News at 5PM, while on ABC there was no news. George Negus hosted the 2000 Today, while Eddie McGuire did the Millennium Live. I was too young to remember but I thought that Eddie had a lot of hosting along with Tracy Grimshaw and other personalities.
Over on Channel 7, they screened the Millennium AFL match, Carlton v Collingwood at the MCG. I assume that the crowd numbers are very low, given that the Test Cricket match between Australia and India at the MCG finished a day ago. The MCG staff had to change from A cricket turf to AFL turf for New Year’s Eve. I wonder what the TV ratings look like for The special millennium AFL match?
I also noticed that Channel 10 aired a special Video Hits show Funk the Millennium.

Also note that A Current Affair was not shown at all in Western Australia on Nine. At least it should’ve been shown at 4:30 PM and ABC News should’ve aired at 5:00 PM. Three weeks later, 10 ceased airing Judge Judy at 6:00 PM Weekdays local time during Summer Period and happened to be replaced by repeat episodes of The Nanny for the remainder of the 2000 calendar year.

Quite a quiet lineup of shows over the New Year’s Eve. Over on ABC, there was the Hopman Cup coverage from Burswood Dome.

Millennium Live was live in WA despite the 3 hour time difference

It changed about the mid 2000’s when they used the 7:30 half hour to attract the kiddy audience. First with Shrek The Halls, then by having the children friendly acts like Hi-5 have the half hour before the main Carols began.

In Melbourne it was at 9:00pm AEDST, Perth just got it on delay:

When Nine took over Carols By Candlelight in 1979 they shifted the start time from 9:30 to 9:00pm AEDST. It was only in the last decade (or so) that they moved it to start at 8:00pm.

They wanted a more family friendly timeslot. Only drawback is that in Melbourne it doesn’t get dark until 9pm in Summer. That’s why the event normally didn’t start until 9pm back then.

It also felt like it was more and more acceptable that events started much later than they do now.

Networks don’t want to programme anything past 9pm now, and yet wonder why audiences leave them for streaming after the first show of the night.

some nights I just go straight to streaming, bypassing FTA. If it wasn’t for Working Dog and/or Channel Ten, I probably wouldn’t watch FTA at all.

Sunday to Wednesday nights the commercial networks mainly offer reality programming on the main channels with repeats on the secondaries - if you want another option its either ABC or SBS channels ( i must admit some of the games shows on SBS secondaries are entertaining).

However, like most my household most goes to streaming (Tubi and Plex are good free options) and YouTube music video after the 6pm news on NBN or Seven
