Just imagine if Nine News Perth had a newsreader of (say) the Brian’s (Henderson/Naylor) or Peter Hitchener’s calibre.

I also don’t think STW ever ran the “More Australians get their news from Channel Nine” promo back in the day either, when Nine News was the most dominant news service nationally in the 90’s-early 00’s.

I don’t think it would make any difference. It’s just that the loyalty of viewers to Seven at 6.00 is too strong. Nine could have the best product in the world and still people would preference Seven.

It was only a lead-in for the News for a couple of months as they only aired the first two seasons before it was replaced with another episode of Antiques Roadshow which didn’t go over well with me since I enjoyed those Brady re-runs.

Peter Waltham came close didn’t they? Made way for Rick and Sue at TVW then hired at STW. I understand he made some ground up in the late 80s under Bond Corp ownership but then lost a lot of it when he left.

STW mixed ownership and differing news budgets probably didn’t help for decades.

Nice to see they started the final batch of Sopranos episodes 2 months after the big finale. I’m sure a lot of people would have been very aware of how the series ended by the time these episodes began airing.

From what I know, the last time Nine News won the ratings in Perth was in 1990 (Rick and Sue would’ve been in their sixth year at the helm at the time); Waltham and Anne Conti were at the helm at the time. That year, Nine News won all five metro markets.

Well that’s what you need to take on Rick and Sue. A duo of Peter Waltham and Greg Pearce to come out of semi retirement :joy:

Was it my imagination or did STW also dig up Coronation Street to lead in to the news at one stage?

Yep, Around 2005 there are guides from that period in the thread with Corrie as the lead-in for the news.

It was a very random choice for the timeslot given that the series hadn’t been on FTA for years

I guess they were just willing to throw anything at the wall at that point in the hopes something could contend with Deal or No Deal.

They absolutely did, both on radio and TV.

Even Channel 7 Perth beamed an AFL match between the Geelong Cats v Fremantle live on a Saturday. I noticed that Channel 7 screened a Rugby Union match between the Wallabies and South Africa at 11:55pm on a delayed telecast in Perth. I don’t know why Channel 7 Perth delayed the Rugby Union match, even if the game was shown at Subiaco Oval.

Because it wouldn’t rate?

Did these new shows make a dent in the Mike Walsh Show?

I doubt it. The soaps continued through most of 1978 but I don’t think Keep Pace With Harriet lasted beyond 1977. The network later tried to fill the gap left by The Mike Walsh Show with The Steve Raymond Show that lasted about a year or so.

In WIN Territory, I noticed that they had a 10-minute Morning News from 11:30am.
Channel 9 aired the Finale of the Torvill & Dean’s Dancing on Ice. I wonder what the ratings were like.

Probably not all the great given it didn’t get a 2007 season.

Originally when Masterchef started in Australia I thought this was the format that the show was going with.
